In ground pool cleaners are automated vacuum cleaners that clean debris, dirt and other sediment from in ground pools.

Background

Swimming pool vacuum cleaners were invented in South Africa by Ferdinand Chauvier. In 1974, Chauvier designed and built the Kreepy Krauly, the first ever automated pool cleaner. Now in ground pool cleaners are made by many different manufacturers and are used all around the world for swimming pool maintenance. In fact, since these automated cleaners make pool maintenance so much faster, easier and more convenient, their popularity is continuously on the rise.

The purpose of both in ground and above ground pool cleaners is to effectively and conveniently remove dirt and debris from swimming pools. While some in ground and above ground pool cleaners are only designed to clean pool bottoms, others will also clean walls and steps. Additionally, there are different varieties of in ground pool cleaners available for different types of pools. For example, some in ground pool cleaners are specifically designed to clean concrete pools while others are designed to clean tile, vinyl and fiberglass swimming pools.

By removing sediment and debris from swimming pools, pool cleaners promote pool health and safety. Certain vacuum models even have the capacity to remove bacteria and other small contaminants from pool water. It's also possible to find in ground pool vacuums that are powerful enough to remove large debris such as pebbles, leaves and twigs. By moving around the pool independently, automated in ground pool cleaners save significant time and effort for anyone involved in residential or commercial pool maintenance.

Types

In ground pool cleaners are available in many different models and varieties, but they all fall into three main categories -- suction side pool cleaners, pressure side pool cleaners and robotic pool cleaners.

Suction Side Pool Cleaners

Suction side pool cleaners for in ground swimming pools are powered by the pool's skimmer and filtration system. A hose attaches the vacuum unit to a suction port, either a skimmer or a special vacuum port. As the filtration pump runs, water is pumped out of the pool, creating suction on the bottom of the pool cleaner. This is what allows debris to be sucked inside the cleaner and it's also what powers the unit's locomotion. Once the debris has been sucked into the pool cleaner, it then moves through the hose and suction port and into the skimmer or the pump's strainer where it's filtered out of the water.

Since suction side pool cleaners are powered by the pool's existing filtration system and don't require any additional plumbing for installation, they are a relatively cheap option for pool maintenance. Moreover, these cleaners are particularly ideal for swimming pools that are mainly affected by dirt and smaller debris.

Pressure Side Pool Cleaners

Pressure side pool cleaners are, as their name suggests, powered by water pressure. The pump that creates the water pressure can either be a special booster pump or the pool's regular circulation pump. As pressurized water is forced through the unit, the necessary suction is created and the vacuum moves around the swimming pool. As a pressure side pool cleaner sweeps the floor and walls of a pool, it draws dirt and debris into an attached, reusable filter bag while also helping to distribute clean, filtered water throughout the pool.

One of the greatest advantages of pressure side pool cleaners for in ground swimming pools is the fact that they don't exert any extra pressure on the pool's filtration system. These cleaners also don't trap debris in the pool's filter so the filter doesn't need to be cleaned as often. Also, since pressure side pool cleaners won't clog up the pool's filter, they are ideal for pools that tend to get filled with larger debris such as twigs and leaves.

Robotic Pool Cleaners

Robotic pool cleaners are self-contained vacuum units that are powered by low-voltage electricity from a small transformer. These electrical pool cleaners don't require any installation and simply need to be plugged in to operate. Robotic pool cleaners have built-in, reusable filters which are easy to clean. Furthermore, since these pool cleaners operate independently from the pool's filtration system, they don't place any stress or resistance on the system, thereby increasing the system's life. While robotic pool cleaners tend to be more expensive than suction side or pressure side pool cleaners, they clean very effectively and often have a computer chip that allows them to diagnose internal problems and to become familiar with the shape of the pool.

How to Clean Your Large Fish Tank

The downside to owning a large fish tank is that it is more work to clean it every week (preferable.) If you want your fish to live a long time and your tank to look clean and clear and free from algae overtaking your habitat then you’ve got to properly clean your tank. Here are the basics.

Siphoning

At least once a week you should siphon out 20% of the water from your tank into a giant bucket and then replace that old water with new tap water that has been properly treated to remove the harmfull acid and iron from the water. When siphoning make sure you dig around into the rocks to get all the waste and leftover food out that has fallen to the bottom. Don’t worry about scaring your fish they should be fine with your sticking your hand and siphon into the tank and going over it thoroughly. When you put the new water into the tank don’t just pour it in which can upset the landscaping but use the siphon to slowly filter the new water into the tank.

Algae scraper

These tools are cheap and effective. Use a squeegee like algae scraper to clean up the walls of your tank from being overrun with algae which not only looks bad but can be harmful to your tank. If you are looking for an easier solution invest in buying an algae eater fish like a pleco which will roam around your tank at night and help to keep it clean and free from algae.

Don’t overfeed

The amateur mistake of first time fish keepers…don’t overfeed your fish as it can lead to waste buildup in your tank. Feed them a small amount of flakes or pellets about twice a day to keep them healthy and satisfied. Remember that it is always more safe to underfeed than to overfeed.

Information About Solar Water Heating

Electric and gas hot water systems accounting for approximately 20% of a household's greenhouse gas emissions,and by installing a solar water system you will reduce these emissions and also save up to 75% of your water heating costs! Table below is sourced from the Debartment of Environment and Climate Change NSW.

Solar pool heating uses a similar technology to building / household solar hot water systems. Solar pool heating involves covering a roof with a black blanket of coils and pipes which also get heated by the sun combined with a slow flow pump which circulates the water through the panel and into the pool. Unfortunately Energy Matters only installs building / household solar water heating systems and does not perform installation of pool water heating systems.

Flat plate collectors work on copper pipes running through a glass covered collector, often connected to a water storage tank on the roof. The hot water can then thermo-syphon itself in and out of the tank, thus heating the water. The updated option of flat plate collectors are evacuated tubes.

Evacuated tubes use a glass tube with a vacuum inside it and copper pipes running through the centre. The copper pipes are all connected to a common manifold which is then connected to a slow flow circulation pump which pumps water to a storage tank below, thus heating the hot water during the day. The hot water can be used at night or the next day due to the insulation of the tank.

The evacuation tube system is superior as they can extract the heat out of the air on a humid day and don't need direct sunlight. Due to the vacuum inside the glass tube, the total efficiency in all areas is higher.

Marine Aquarium Care- Invertebrates Only

The care required for an invertebrate only tank is very similar to that of any other saltwater tank; however, the invertebrates are far less hardy than fish. It is recommended that you become skilled with a fish only tank before attempting an Invertebrate aquarium. Most Invertebrates require a specialized diet. Check with the supplier before purchasing and be sure that you are willing to make the commitment to have food delivered if necessary. There are two different types of invertebrates, tropical and cold water. Make sure that the type you are buy is compatible with its other tank mates. 

A few examples of tropical invertebrates are tubeworms, red hermit crabs, cleaner shrimp and the sea apple. All of this marine life is compatible in terms of water conditions. They require a water temperature between seventy five and seventy nine degrees Fahrenheit, a P.H. between 8.2 and 8.4 and a salinity content of 1.020-1.024. As you can see, there is very little wiggle room associated with these measurements. It is extremely important to check the levels daily, or the results could be costly. These invertebrates are not compatible, however, with their food source needs. Check with the supplier for compatibility before combining tropical invertebrates.     

Unlike their tropical counter parts, cold water invertebrates are usually not sold in stores. They have to be collected from tide pools. It is important to make sure that these species are not on the endangered species list before removing them from their home. It is equally important to do research in order to verify that you are able to properly feed them and care for their very specific needs. Sea Anemones, prawns, shrimp, and starfishes are a few varieties that have been successfully maintained in an aquarium. They require a water temperature between fifty four and fifty nine degrees Fahrenheit, a P.H. between 8-8.4 and a salinity content of 1.024-1.025. Luckily they do eat the same food. They feed off of a diet of small pieces of raw fish, shrimp, squid and mussels. 

When keeping cold water invertebrates such as the species mention above, it is a good idea to keep a separate tank full of shrimp, mussels, and scallops to be used as a food source, if you wish to use fresh rather than frozen foods.  Be careful when keeping shrimp, as all of the invertebrates listed above feed on shrimp, including shrimp themselves. It is unlikely, however that a healthy live shrimp will be eaten whole by another shrimp or starfish. Invertebrates should be fed more frequently in smaller amounts than fish. Try to feed only an amount that can be consumed in the first thirty to sixty seconds.     

When setting up an invertebrate tank remember to include live rock, because some invertebrates feed on the parasites that grow on the live rock. A substrate should also be included in this type of aquarium. It will provide a place for the crabs and shrimp to dig and bury themselves. A light should be included as well, if you intend to keep anemones.
