Heat waves, Public health and mitigation.

Global climate change is almost certain to increase the frequency and intensity of heat waves. Over the last fifty years we have seen an increase in heat wave events, an increase scientists believe is the result at least in part, of human activity. Had it not been so in our own country until few year ago this phenomena use to occur in few particular part areas like Nepalganj, Bhairahawa but these days even Kathmandu valley itself is not aloof of it. Normal pattern of rainfall now becomes a story of past. Prolong spell of dry spell since last autumn rain is still continue when monsoon will start and what will be its pattern for metrologist it seems to be uphill task to predict. The recently released Fourth Assessment of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) concludes that heat waves will very likely increase over most land areas over the course of this century. Conservative modeling estimates predict that these increases, absent significant reductions in carbon emissions, will result in a 70% increase in heat-wave deaths in the world over the next forty years. Heat waves differ in important respects from natural disasters like hurricanes or earthquakes. Our collective memory about these events fades quickly once temperatures return to normal. Few people seem to remember, for example, that the Chicago heat wave of 1995 killed more than 700 people, or that more than 52,000 Europeans perished in the extreme heat of the summer of 2003--including more than 14,800 in France alone. Even the 2006 deadly heat wave in California, in which at least 140 and as many as 466 people died, has faded quickly from public consciousness. Furthermore, a prolonged heat wave during the summer of 1980, during which researchers estimate that between 1,500 and 10,000 people perished, has been long forgotten. Increased heat waves from climate change are not, of course, the only catastrophic effects expected from global warming. Some of the most dramatic effects may require large structural and political changes. For example, massive sea level rise will require infrastructure investments to protect vulnerable shorelines, and prolonged drought may cause political upheaval and unrest in areas of the world where water is already scarce. The good news about increased heat waves, by contrast, is that we already posses the know-how to respond to the corresponding increase in health risk. Heat waves are not a new phenomenon, and some jurisdictions have made impressive strides in reducing heat-wave deaths. But many jurisdictions across the world are ill-prepared to cope. If Hurricane Katrina and its aftermath have taught us anything, it is that we need local, contextualized preparation taking into account cultural, social and economic realities to minimize catastrophe. The phenomenon of heat waves is being considered for two reasons. First, heat waves already pose a large health threat to our most vulnerable populations and, though we possess the means and know-how to prevent many heat-wave deaths, many world jurisdictions are unprepared to cope. Second, the future looks even worse.

As the IPCC Fourth Assessment warns, global climate change will very likely increase the frequency and intensity of extreme heat events over the course of the 21st century. Unless we engage in efforts to mitigate the worst effects of extreme heat, heat death tolls will dwarf current annual rates. The numbers of those who die from excess heat annually are already significant: more people die heat-related deaths annually in the tropics on average, than from any other natural disaster. Though most of us are simply uncomfortable when the temperatures rise, a much more dire consequence of excess heat is a rapid rise in mortality rates, particularly among the most vulnerable populations.

 The elderly, the poor, the socially isolated, and the mentally and physically ill are at the highest risk of dying of heatstroke and other heat-related illness. Average annual deaths by heat stroke between 1979 and 2003 conservatively total 354 and, in actuality, are likely closer to 1,800 per year. In contrast, annual deaths from hurricanes total 149 and would plummet to 21 deaths per year if not for the devastating gulf coast hurricanes of 2005. Nevertheless, heat waves rarely provoke a massive government response. The 1980 heat wave is listed only because it was accompanied by widespread drought, causing massive agricultural losses. Current policy and academic attention to climate change is appropriately directed most intensely on efforts to stabilize and ultimately reduce carbon emissions in order to slow the earth's warming. Regardless of those efforts, warming is, and will continue to occur. Accompanying that warming will be more frequent and more intense episodes of extreme heat. Even the most aggressive greenhouse gas reduction efforts will not protect us from some of the negative effects of higher temperatures. Thus, the aim here is to focus not on efforts to reduce carbon emissions but on how to mitigate one of the negative effects of warming--mortality caused by increased heat waves that will inevitably occur. Central to any mitigation strategy is the need to understand why the general public and many policymakers pay little attention to the relatively large annual heat-wave death toll.

Several explanations, drawing from research on risk perception, and ultimately conclude that the lack of property damage from excess heat helps explain why heat waves and heat-wave deaths recede quickly from our collective memory. Indeed, because heat waves cause no property damage, they directly affect a smaller absolute number of victims and generate neither destructive media images nor government sponsored cleanup efforts. As a result, heat waves are less memorable events and, as risk perception studies would predict, recede quickly from our collective memory.

 The heat wave mitigation strategies and linking them to what we know from risk perception literature in order to improve their effectiveness. Estimates of deaths as a result of excess heat come from two separate sources. Some counts include only those deaths where a death certificate lists excessive heat or heat stroke as a cause of death. Heat stroke occurs when the body heats to at least 105 [degrees]F and cannot cool itself. Heatstroke happens quite quickly and causes increasingly serious symptoms, including disorientation, delirium and coma. Those who survive heat stroke are at high risk for organ failure and death within a year.

But heat stroke is not the only cause of increased mortality during a heat wave. Researchers have long noted that average daily death rates increase rapidly during the second or third day of a heat wave and stay elevated during the period of prolonged heat. Individuals with cardiac disease, for example, are at higher risk of death during heat waves because excess heat creates pressure on the cardiovascular system to cool the body; similarly, those suffering from respiratory ailments have an increased risk of death because heat waves are often accompanied by increases in air pollution and small particulate matter. Thus, many death counts for heat waves are calculated by using an excess mortality measure, which basically involves subtracting the expected mortality from actual daily death rates. Deaths from means other than heat stroke during heat waves are typically a much higher percentage than heat stroke deaths.

If climate change projections are accurate, the next forty years may bring annual death rates from heat waves in the world in excess of the death toll from single Hurricane Katrina. The already high heat related death toll remains largely invisible to the general public and many policy makers. Complex reasons account for this lack of visibility, including the nature of the victims, the lack of property damage heat waves create, and cognitive mechanisms that cause the lay public and policymakers to underestimate the risks of excess heat and, in turn, to fail to take steps to mitigate its worst effects. Nevertheless, the mechanisms to avoid high numbers of heat-wave deaths exist. The central question is whether vulnerable jurisdictions will act before a calamitous heat wave occurs.

What Vitamins Can Increase Memory And Help Relieve Symptoms Of Add And Adhd

For the last two decades research has shown that nutrition has a dramatic effect on the function of the brain. Proper nutrition and supplementation can not only increase memory, focus and concentration but can also be effective in helping individuals with ADD and ADHD as well as reduce the future risk of Alzheimer's, Parkinson's disease and Dementia.

Many people realize as they age they slow down. Starting a Saltwater Aquarium - For Beginners

STEP ONE, THE AQUARIUM ITSELF

Most of my customers purchase aquariums that are way too small and end up upgrading in the near future anyway.  The minimum size for a saltwater aquarium should be at least 55 gallons.  Not only will you be able to keep most fish and corals in this tank, your parameters (salinity, ph, etc) will tend not to fluctuate as much in a larger tank.

Purchase your aquarium and a suitable stand.  I recommend getting one at your local aquarium store that is designed for the aquarium.  Don't forget, a 55 gallon aquarium weighs over 550lbs without any rock or sand in it so don't put it on an old table.  Now that you have your tank and stand place it on a level surface in your home away from any windows where direct sunlight can influence the temperature.  Ensure the tank is sitting level on the stand.  This is especially crucial with larger tanks as you don't want any pressure points that can split your tanks seams.

STEP TWO, ROCK, SAND AND LIGHTING

Purchase a quality reef sand such as Carib Sea Ocean Direct Live Sand and ensure there is at least 2-3 inches of substrate at the bottom of your tank.  This will help remove nitrates in the near future.  We will get into nitrates later on but for now just make sure you purchase enough sand.  As far as lighting there are a variety of options out there.  T5 High Outputs are a good option to keep your electric bill reasonable.  You should do a little research to find out what you will suite your needs.  You will need about 2-3 20 lb bags for every 50 Gallons to achieve this.  Now for the rock, you can use what is called live rock or you can use dry reef rock that is readily available online.  What many aquarists don't know is you do not need to use live rock to start.  You can purchase dry reef rock for about $2.75 - $5 per lb versus paying about $7-15 per pound for live rock.  They will both give you the same end result and dry rock gains about 10-30% more weight once it's wet so it's a better value.  Purchase about one lb for every gallon of water you have so for a 55 Gallon aquarium purchase 50-55 lbs of rock.  Position your rocks securely as desired and proceed to the next step, the water.

STEP THREE, WATER, POWERHEADS AND HEATERS

Now you need to purchase salt (I recommend Instant Ocean for its consistency), Powerheads (Koralia or Aquarium Systems Maxi Jets are a good choice).  The flow you require is a simple formula; at least 10 x the size of you're aquarium so for example a 55 Gallon Aquarium needs at least 550 GPH (gallons per hour) of flow.  Now you need to purchase a heater, both Jager and Visi Therm are a decent choice.  They recommend what size is required (in watts) on their packaging and websites.  Purchase a large enough heater because temperature consistency is important for your livestock.  Last but not least purchase a Refractometer for around 50 dollars online.  Measuring salinity with a plastic hydrometer is just not accurate and will cause you grief.

Ok, now that you have purchased your powerheads, heater and salt it's time to fill up the tank with water.  One of the most commonly overlooked items is the water itself.  Take it from my experience; use Reverse Osmosis Water with a TDS (total dissolved solids) close as possible to zero.  To start you can purchase this at any water store in 5 gallon jugs or you can purchase a reverse osmosis system for under $200.  If you are serious about keeping saltwater aquariums you need this to help reduceeliminate various algae's and bacteria's that can bloom in your tank and kill all of your corals.  This is the reason that most hobbyists throw in the towel.  I could go into more detail about this but just Google red slime or hair algae and do a little reading.  Install your powerheads and heater and start filling up your aquarium.  Once it is full add your salt.  It is usually about ¼ cup per gallon but check the manufactures recommendation.  Get your salinity up to about 1.024 or 1.025. 

STEP FOUR, THE WAITING GAME

At this point your tank is cycling.  You are waiting for little bacteria that you cannot see to magically appear out of nowhere and start consuming the ammonia.  This can take anywhere from 3-6 weeks and your light is not required.  A trick I have learned is to add a 5-10lb piece of Live Rock to speed up the cycle.  This will introduce some bacteria and life to your tank.   In a nutshell what happens is the bacteria eat the ammonia and produce nitrites (another type of ammonia), yet another bacteria turns the nitrites into nitrates which are pretty much left in your tank to accumulate.  Skimming and water changes will keep nitrates under control.  You can start skimming any time now.  It's not critical at this point but it's a good time to fire up your skimmer.  I have always used Coralife Super Skimmers.  They are easy to setup and maintain and do a great job of removing organic waste.  They also give you an option to setup in a sump (another article, another time) or hang on the back of your tank.  They are not pretty but the rock work can hide most of it.  All you have to do now is add top off water to make up for the water that has evaporated.  Do not add saltwater to make up for the missing water or your salinity will rise.  Salt does not evaporate into the air.  That is why we top off with fresh water.  When your ammonia test shows zero you will need to do a 20 percent water change and check it again in a day or so.  If it tests zero you can start by adding a fish.  Take it very slow at this point or your tank will re-cycle killing everything.  Add about one fish or coral once a week and take it slow.  We did not test for nitrites or nitrates because they really don't matter at this point.

STEP 5, MAINTAINING YOUR TANK

So your tank is setup and you have a couple of fish and a coral or two.  At this point you should be doing at least a 5 percent water change every week to keep the nitrates down and nuisance algae at bay.  It will also replenish the calcium, magnesium and trace elements that your corals need to survive.  Purchase a good magnet cleaner to scrub the front of your glass.  If you do end up getting some algae run some GFO (granular ferric oxide) in a media bag in a filter to remove the phosphates from your water.  This will keep it from spreading and in combination with manual removal you can keep it under control.

Blowoff Air Knives for Industry

Blower and fan units used in tank, blender, and conveyor tube drying can reduce drying time by an average of 50% compared with natural air drying. They are almost always a direct-drive design in order to minimize size and cost. However, an in-line electric heater must be added, and this ultimately raises both the cost and total power consumption. The final assembly still must be compact enough to mount on a portable cart to easily service multiple mixers, and this portability requirement limits the size and drying power of these forced-air dryers.

There are other performance issues and technical drawbacks that make blower and fan units problematic for many users. They must be connected to an in-line electric heater in order to introduce hot air into the tanks, blenders, and auger conveyors. The blowers tend to have high pressure at low airflows, but low pressures at high airflows. The fan designs have low pressures at all airflow ranges and this low pressure makes it impossible to overcome air pressure resistance through the heater and throughout the tank, blender, and conveying circuit without losing all of the benefits of high air volume.

The end result is low air volumes for both the blower and fan dryer units. This causes equally low rates of air exchange throughout the whole tank, blender, and conveyor system. The net effect of such low air volumes at high air temperatures in regard to the heaters is that air temperature spikes can occur in certain areas. These become dry while other internal surfaces of the tank, blender, and conveyor system remain moist, thereby remaining at ambient temperature longer and not drying at the same rate. These temperature extremes can also cause damage to rubber glands and seals within the tank, blender, and conveyor circuit. Because electric heater elements have a typical surface temperature of 1200ºF, safety considerations increase if the electric heater coils or the heater controller has any type of malfunction.

High-speed belt drive blowers with electric motors ranging from 3 to 50 hp offer several advantages over the direct-drive blowers. They occupy the same smaller space of direct drive while having higher horsepower than the direct-drive blowers and fans. Because hot air is generated by recycling the natural blower heat, they do not require heaters. It is also possible to connect multiple tank, blender, and conveyor tube ports from one blower simultaneously, but care should be taken to make certain that the airflow is balanced to ensure that the drying time is equal.

As discussed earlier, the optimum design for drying tanks, blenders, and conveyors is by use of a pressurized air circuit in order to achieve the smallest temperature variance throughout. Since this pressure must be maintained along with an air exchange rate of 1–2/min, there must be some means of restricting exit air.

There are certainly a number of variables among the wide range of manufacturers of tanks, blenders, and auger conveyors, but the common denominators for defining an effective drying system usually prove to be very much the same.

The first step is to determine the maximum continuous air temperature to which the entire circuit can be exposed. Although there are certain systems where Teflon seals and gaskets can handle greater than 200ºF, a more common acceptable maximum is 150ºF continuous air temperature. Just as with the high-temperature solutions, operators must take care to avoid bare skin contact with metal surfaces at 150ºF. However, food safety personnel endorse the 160ºF air temperatures for the 15–30-minutes drying cycle as it supplements the sanitizing process.

Next, to minimize air temperature gradients within the entire tank, blender, and conveying system, the drying air must be pressurized at all times to between 0.8 and 1.0 psig. Air molecules mix better at these slightly compressed levels, and the “hot spots” that are common with the low-pressure blower, fan, and electric heater systems are greatly reduced.

The last piece of the drying formula, with the air temperature at 160ºF and the internal air pressures at ~1.0 psi, is to obtain a total air volume exchange rate sufficient to meet the drying cycle time objective. The more air exchanges, the faster the drying time. With a wash temperature of 150ºF, the air volume exchange rates are as follows: with one air exchange per minute, the drying cycle is approximately 30 minutes; with two air exchanges per minute, the drying time is generally 15–20 minutes.

However, if the CIP temperatures are lower than 140ºF or the target drying time is less than 15 minutes, the horsepower and size of the drying system will make a portable dryer less practical.
