Classifications Of Freshwater Aquarium Plants

Aquatic plants portray an important role in a typical marine life ecosystem.  They provide the needed natural oxygen for the whole aquarium.  A freshwater aquarium would not be complete without certain aquatic plants on it.  These plants not only make a balanced marine ecosystem but also an added attraction to your freshwater aquarium.  There are certain types of aquatic plants that you can choose from for your aquarium set up to be more attractive.
 
Floaters
These are the most common choice for aquariums due to its style and displayed elegance.  They mostly thrive at the surface of the aquarium with its roots rising on the water surface that's why they are commonly termed as "floaters".  Some good examples of floaters are Fairy Moss and An Driccia.
 
Rhizomes
These types of aquatic plants are usually thick stemmed kind that stretched out inside the fish tank horizontally with its leaves sprouting evenly at the stem.  They are like other normal plants that grow on land that they tend to grow fast in its stem side wards mostly occupying over the substrates that is why a lot of aquarists started growing them on driftwoods.  The Anubias and the African Fern are the most commonly used rhizomes for freshwater aquarium.
 
Rosettes
Rosettes are characterized to be like crown looking plants with roots deeply grown underneath them.  They are more of ornamental in nature for most of the fresh water aquarium plants because of a shortened stem axis that tends to spread over its leaves beautifully.  Rosettes need to be maintained more because of its unique features and some examples of this type are Amazon Sword and Sagittaria.
 
Stems
These plants basically take its name because of its appearance.  They look like a stem that is firmly attached into the substrate.  The stem's nodes have paired and multiple varieties of leaves attached on it.
 
Other Known Aquatic Plants
Java Moss may be considered as one of the most common aquatic plants for your freshwater aquarium.  These types have high tolerance rate for sudden changes in water ph levels and they can actually grow fast which makes it very fascinating and ideal for beginners.

Water Wisteria is plants that grow more quickly and they have lots of uses for your aquarium.  These are good plants to utilize because they regulate the algae level very well though these plants suck more of the most nutrients available for the whole aquarium so keep it monitored also.  This type of plants when left unattended will pose a certain stress to some aquatic plants as well because of its tendencies to get more nutrients than others.  It is better to keep this in minimal quantity, watching its growth closely to maintain the normal balance of the whole aquarium itself.
 
Cryptocoryne Becketti is typically classified as an amphibious plant meaning it can grow well in land and also in water area.  It has special qualities compared to other types which make it more challenging to keep. It is classified as an ornamental plant just like rosettes which gives a dazzling array of different colors.  You can benefit more of this plant if you are able to raise it well.
 
The success of putting up an array of aquatic plants in your freshwater aquarium can depict an actual marine life set up.  In any existing ecosystem these plants require certain amount of maintenance.  Since they are very important to maintain the balance inside your marine ecosystem you need to take good care of them by providing them ample amount of lighting, feeding them with proper nutrients and checking their over all living conditions.

Popular Live Cultured Corals for Reef Enthusiasts

There are so many different live cultured corals to choose from, each with their own unique colors and movements; many aquarium owners find that they don’t even need saltwater fish to create a lively underwater reef environment.  It is common for marine hobbyists to start with echinopora corals such as the Echinopora Chalice Four Piece Frag Set, which includes a combination of frags that are all about one inch in size.  Echinophyllia corals, which are a newly discovered genus in the reef aquarium hobby, have become another popular choice for saltwater enthusiasts.  These and other corals are so complex and aesthetically appealing that many people aren’t even inclined to buy saltwater fish to liven up their aquariums. 

Echinopora corals are extremely popular in the reef aquarium hobby because they are typically very easy to maintain as long as there is moderate lighting and moderate water flow.  These live cultured corals thrive in a variety of lighting conditions, such as fluorescent bulbs and MH bulbs.  People like these because they are fun to watch in the tank and they grow and change into different colors over extended periods of time.  Hobbyists often watch their echinopora chalice grow into wildly colorful morphs, making for an even more interesting experience. 

Echinophyllia corals have quickly found a fan base in the reef aquarium hobby world even though this genus was only recently discovered.  And in that short period of time, Echinophyllia aspera has become the most common member of the genus.  These corals are so well received because they come in bright colors such as red, pink and green, and they are good for beginners due to a slow growth rate, easy-medium level of maintenance and a medium level of hardiness.   Echinophyllia can sometimes produce sweeper tentacles, however, and they are capable of a significant degree of chemical aggression towards nearby corals. 

The variety of live cultured corals on the market is so extensive that it would be difficult to list all the possibilities in one place.  The Echinopora and Echinophyllia are two popular genera, but there are many other choices each with their own unique benefits and drawbacks.  The wide selection of options is just one more reason to consider a reef aquarium that relies solely on corals rather than saltwater fish.

Maintain Tank Temperature With A Fish Tank Chiller

As the name suggests, fish tank chillers are designed to keep the water in your fish tank cool in warmer climates. They are mainly used in marine aquariums where fish tend to be highly sensitive to temperature although fancy goldfish in tropical climes also benefit from the use of a fish tank chiller. An additional benefit is that cooler water has a greater capacity to hold dissolved oxygen thus avoiding issues with low levels of oxygen in your aquarium.

When do you need the fish tank chiller?

A fish tank chiller will be required when you run an aquarium with fish that prefer to live in cold water only. Aquarium chillers will maintain the water temperature you desire. Changing the temperature is something you need to do yourself, manually.

An alternative to a chiller is to run an air conditioning unit in the room that contains the aquarium, however running the air conditioner just to keep the fish tank water at the desired temperature can be a very expensive option. And even though a fish tank chiller may seem like an expensive item it will soon pay for itself if you are not running the air conditioner day - especially if you are not home during the day or you are on vacation.

Another chiller alternative is to add ice to the tank but this is highly impractical unless it is a very short term method to deal with heat wave conditions. If you do need to add ice to your tank it can be added by freezing water in a bottle. The frozen water bottle can be lowered into the tank or hung on the side of the tank.

For very warm climates and for fish that naturally require cold water there is no real alternative other than a chiller unit. It is also possible to purchase an aquarium heater and chiller in one unit which can be used year round to maintain the water temperature in both summer and winter.

When choosing your chiller you will have a choice of thermoelectric, in-line or drop-in fish tank chiller.

Thermoelectric chillers are commonly used in small tanks of less than 60 gallon capacity. They are energy efficient and silent running and can be used in both salt and freshwater aquariums.

Drop-in chillers are commonly used in saltwater aquariums or reef set ups. They require no additional plumbing and are fitted in line with the tank filter. They are simple to install and have low maintenance requirements.

In-line aquarium chillers are manufactured for tanks with a capacity of 60 gallons or more. They have a motor, a compressor and cooling fans and will require a well-ventilated area for installation. They may require professional installation and they are quite large.

An aquarium thermometer is an inexpensive necessity to use in conjunction with your tank chiller. If your chiller fails or mismanages the temperature of your aquarium you need to know immediately. A thermometer is a reliable way of monitory the temperature.

The main disadvantages of fish tank chillers are the cost of the units themselves - which can vary from a few hundred up to several thousand dollars - and the energy that they consume, which can be 80-100 watts per hour.

The Relaxation Aquariums Can Bring

People are always amazed when they find out the effects that fish, particularly watching them, have on humans. Many people nowadays have stressful lives, high blood pressure, and even insomnia. Keeping an aquarium or installing a pond can be great therapy for those problems. Studies dating back to the later part of the 80's have shown that gazing at ponds and aquariums with various fish lessens stress and significantly lowers blood pressure.

Researchers have looked closely at the effects of hypnosis. They then compared the results of these effects to aquariums, some having fish and others that were without. In each and every case, having some type of aquarium reduced blood pressure. Even more interesting is the fact that any aquarium or any outdoor water feature for that matter, that contained fish caused a greater reduction in blood pressure than when these bodies of water were simply decorated but fishless. Believe it or not, even video tapes of fish were found to be helpful in providing therapeutic effects.

Older members of society who were given access to an aquarium filled with fish had significantly lower blood pressure numbers as well. Watching fish and their tranquil movement in the water has also calmed children suffering from various hyperactivity disorders. Dental patients who underwent hypnosis versus an aquarium also experienced similar benefits from watching fish. It's no wonder that doctor's offices and waiting rooms of all kinds typically have a tank of some sort with plenty of fish in them. Aside from lowering blood pressure, it is simply entertaining to watch the fishes' activity.

Studies have also concluded that seniors suffering from Alzheimer's experience a number of health benefits from watching fish activity in ponds, aquariums, and the like. Some have gone as far as to incorporate a water garden in their home to allow for this. Alzheimer patients consumed more food, and ended up needing fewer supplements after putting an aquarium in the dining room or a pond outside in a garden area. Physically aggressive behaviors also decreased noticeably after viewing the fish.

Virtually any aquarium or pond, from sizes large to small, has its own set of benefits. A large pond or aquarium is wonderful, but if funds or space is limited, a smaller one will do. If it isn't possible to maintain an aquarium, consider fish that would do well in an outdoor setting. Garden fountains and ponds that incorporate colorful and entertaining fish are always a lovely addition to the scenic surroundings. If you create the proper atmosphere, there's no limit to the stress relief you can find in the comfort of your own garden area.

Aquariums are very useful for indoor settings, but outdoor water features, garden statuary, and patio décor also have their appeal. When you take into consideration the tranquil sounds of flowing water with the calming nature of playful fish swimming about, it's no wonder that these features are so prevalent and that their benefits are well known and sought out. People get so caught up in their everyday responsibilities and worries that they forget to breathe. Sometime it's so beneficial to just take a moment, breathe, and take in your surroundings. More often than not you will find that it does help to center yourself. Fish are, surprisingly, just one of the ways you can relax. Certainly, you should take advantage of their amazing stress relieving benefits whenever and wherever you find the opportunity to do so.
