Pro Filter,Inc has just started manufacturing a new filter called Pre-Filters or Overbags. The Pre-Filters are made to slip over most cartridge filters and will greatly extend the life of the cartridge filter.

In some cartridge filter applications, strands or fiberous dusts have a tendency to bridge across the filters, become wedged in the cartridge pleats and even stick to the media, making pulse cleaning difficult. Examples of this are: Corn shelling, paper, fiberglass, seed processing, fiberglass, hay compacting and many more. To prevent bridging and wedging, the nylon mesh cartridge overbags are fitted over the cartridge filter. When the system is turned on the very fine and slippery nylon mesh Pre-Filter is sucked into the cartridge filter. The Pre-Filter fits loosely around the cartridge filter so when it pulsates the Pre-Filter does not restrict air flow. The nylon mesh is so slippery that when the system pulsates nothing sticks to it's surface. It is also so fine that the bigger particles can not penetrate the nylon mesh. The bottom line is that your filter cartridge will last longer and will save your company money. This pre filter fits over vertical cartridges and comes in various sizes. Starting a Saltwater Aquarium - For Beginners

STEP ONE, THE AQUARIUM ITSELF

Most of my customers purchase aquariums that are way too small and end up upgrading in the near future anyway. The minimum size for a saltwater aquarium should be at least 55 gallons. Not only will you be able to keep most fish and corals in this tank, your parameters (salinity, ph, etc) will tend not to fluctuate as much in a larger tank.

Purchase your aquarium and a suitable stand. I recommend getting one at your local aquarium store that is designed for the aquarium. Don't forget, a 55 gallon aquarium weighs over 550lbs without any rock or sand in it so don't put it on an old table. Now that you have your tank and stand place it on a level surface in your home away from any windows where direct sunlight can influence the temperature. Ensure the tank is sitting level on the stand. This is especially crucial with larger tanks as you don't want any pressure points that can split your tanks seams.

STEP TWO, ROCK, SAND AND LIGHTING

Purchase a quality reef sand such as Carib Sea Ocean Direct Live Sand and ensure there is at least 2-3 inches of substrate at the bottom of your tank. This will help remove nitrates in the near future. We will get into nitrates later on but for now just make sure you purchase enough sand. As far as lighting there are a variety of options out there. T5 High Outputs are a good option to keep your electric bill reasonable. You should do a little research to find out what you will suite your needs. You will need about 2-3 20 lb bags for every 50 Gallons to achieve this. Now for the rock, you can use what is called live rock or you can use dry reef rock that is readily available online. What many aquarists don't know is you do not need to use live rock to start. You can purchase dry reef rock for about $2.75 - $5 per lb versus paying about $7-15 per pound for live rock. They will both give you the same end result and dry rock gains about 10-30% more weight once it's wet so it's a better value. Purchase about one lb for every gallon of water you have so for a 55 Gallon aquarium purchase 50-55 lbs of rock. Position your rocks securely as desired and proceed to the next step, the water.

STEP THREE, WATER, POWERHEADS AND HEATERS

Now you need to purchase salt (I recommend Instant Ocean for its consistency), Powerheads (Koralia or Aquarium Systems Maxi Jets are a good choice). The flow you require is a simple formula; at least 10 x the size of you're aquarium so for example a 55 Gallon Aquarium needs at least 550 GPH (gallons per hour) of flow. Now you need to purchase a heater, both Jager and Visi Therm are a decent choice. They recommend what size is required (in watts) on their packaging and websites. Purchase a large enough heater because temperature consistency is important for your livestock. Last but not least purchase a Refractometer for around 50 dollars online. Measuring salinity with a plastic hydrometer is just not accurate and will cause you grief.

Ok, now that you have purchased your powerheads, heater and salt it's time to fill up the tank with water. One of the most commonly overlooked items is the water itself. Take it from my experience; use Reverse Osmosis Water with a TDS (total dissolved solids) close as possible to zero. To start you can purchase this at any water store in 5 gallon jugs or you can purchase a reverse osmosis system for under $200. If you are serious about keeping saltwater aquariums you need this to help reduceeliminate various algae's and bacteria's that can bloom in your tank and kill all of your corals. This is the reason that most hobbyists throw in the towel. I could go into more detail about this but just Google red slime or hair algae and do a little reading. Install your powerheads and heater and start filling up your aquarium. Once it is full add your salt. It is usually about ¼ cup per gallon but check the manufactures recommendation. Get your salinity up to about 1.024 or 1.025.

STEP FOUR, THE WAITING GAME

At this point your tank is cycling. You are waiting for little bacteria that you cannot see to magically appear out of nowhere and start consuming the ammonia. This can take anywhere from 3-6 weeks and your light is not required. A trick I have learned is to add a 5-10lb piece of Live Rock to speed up the cycle. This will introduce some bacteria and life to your tank. In a nutshell what happens is the bacteria eat the ammonia and produce nitrites (another type of ammonia), yet another bacteria turns the nitrites into nitrates which are pretty much left in your tank to accumulate. Skimming and water changes will keep nitrates under control. You can start skimming any time now. It's not critical at this point but it's a good time to fire up your skimmer. I have always used Coralife Super Skimmers. They are easy to setup and maintain and do a great job of removing organic waste. They also give you an option to setup in a sump (another article, another time) or hang on the back of your tank. They are not pretty but the rock work can hide most of it. All you have to do now is add top off water to make up for the water that has evaporated. Do not add saltwater to make up for the missing water or your salinity will rise. Salt does not evaporate into the air. That is why we top off with fresh water. When your ammonia test shows zero you will need to do a 20 percent water change and check it again in a day or so. If it tests zero you can start by adding a fish. Take it very slow at this point or your tank will re-cycle killing everything. Add about one fish or coral once a week and take it slow. We did not test for nitrites or nitrates because they really don't matter at this point.

STEP 5, MAINTAINING YOUR TANK

So your tank is setup and you have a couple of fish and a coral or two. At this point you should be doing at least a 5 percent water change every week to keep the nitrates down and nuisance algae at bay. It will also replenish the calcium, magnesium and trace elements that your corals need to survive. Purchase a good magnet cleaner to scrub the front of your glass. If you do end up getting some algae run some GFO (granular ferric oxide) in a media bag in a filter to remove the phosphates from your water. This will keep it from spreading and in combination with manual removal you can keep it under control.

My Social Media Love Manifesto

Quick, what single word that comes to mind when you try to describe social media? Authenticity? Immediacy? Participation?

What about meanness?

It seems the best way to drive traffic to your blog is to write that something or someone is:

Lame

Dead

Irrelevant

Clueless

It’s the social media version of the Mad Libs game. Title your blog post “[proper noun] is [adjective from above list]!” and watch the comments roll in!

The problem with this game is that often, innocent, or mostly innocent people are caught in the crosshairs, and exposed to undeserved risk to reputation and career.

Certainly public condemnation is called for in many situations, but where do you draw the line? Gross ethical misconduct? Easy call. But what about a poorly thought out business model, a bad user interface, or a momentary, innocent lapse in judgment? Do these kinds of situations deserve the social media equivalent of the public beating in the town square? Or is it that the risk to reputation and career of harsh public criticism directed at specific individuals and companies is outweighed by the usefulness of this kind or reportage in helping others avoid the same mistakes?
There are several things that encourage negative behavior in social media. The first is the idea that a good blog is one that gets lots of visitors and lots of links. That’s good if you sell advertising on your blog or if your ego demands it. So we write provocative headlines and we take on sacred cows. Because (mixing a few metaphors here) social media is like a day at the race track: some people come just to see the crashes.

Another more subtle factor is the need some of us feel, and I include myself in this category, to offer our professional wisdom to others in the industry. It’s often easiest to do that by commenting on a case study. Case studies involve real, identifiable people and their behavior, so it’s hard to write about them without naming the people involved.

In my journalism school days, during the Coolidge administration, we talked about the dismal failure of “good news:” print and broadcast news outlets designed to balance the doom, gloom, death and depravity highlighted every night on the evening news. The truth is, for whatever reason, bad news sells.

When I write about something I’ve read relevant to social media, PR or corporate communications, I try to base my analysis on the facts, and to avoid character assassination. I tend to stay away from the big four adjectives above, although I did call a couple of people “weasels.”

Lately, I have been giving a lot of thought as to whether all of this negativity is really necessary, and whether there is another healthier, more useful way to carry on these discussions.

This all started a few weeks ago when I left a comment on a blog in which I was critical of someone’s professional conduct. I soon realized that while I thought I was participating in an academic discussion on social media ethics, I was in fact unfairly questioning the integrity of a fellow professional based on only a handful of facts (those included in the blog post.) I did two things I have never done before. I apologized to this person, and I asked the author of the blog to delete my comment.

I then wondered, is it possible to talk about hypothetical conduct to avoid criticizing specific individuals, or is it only through “real life” case studies that we can understand difficult concepts, particularly in the area of ethics? What kind of conduct merits public disclosure? Where do we draw the line when it comes to criticizing the thoughts and deeds of others?

I’m not sure what the answers are. I’m still working through it. Until I figure it out, I have for the most part stopped using case studies on my blog, and have stopped criticizing people as a way to make a point.

And to help me establish my own rules of engagement, I decided to write my Social Media Love Manifesto. Despite the evidence that “good news” and kindness are not big sellers, I thought I would give it a shot.

While many claim that Web 2.0 and social media have brought with them new and uncharted terrain, where etiquette is defining itself with each advance and new rules are being written every day, the line between the online world and the real world was largely erased a long time ago, and there is no longer any reason for two sets of moral and ethical guidelines.

The people we “meet” in our online interactions are real people. They probably own a computer or two, write a blog or participate in a social network, and through the social media filter we see only glimpses of them, but that does not mean that they are not real, or that we are in any way excused from treating them like any other person we would meet.

I have therefore resolved that when writing on my blog, or when using any other form of social media, when calling into question the conduct of a specific, identifiable person, I will:

Base my comments on the facts, and make reasonable efforts to gather all of the relevant facts before weighing in on a controversial discussion.

Weigh carefully the value of any comments I choose to make against the potential for harm.

And I will not:

Make assumptions about people’s motivations.

Generate controversy for its own sake.

Join others by superficially “piling on” when someone is under attack

I will always strive to:

Treat people online with the respect and kindness I would extend to a friend or colleague.

Take time regularly to leave a supportive comment on a blog or acknowledge someone positively in a public forum.

Maybe I’m naïve or foolish. If I come across as didactic, preachy or self-serving, I don’t mean to. But I’d like to think we could all be a little nicer. Since I have agreed to follow my Social Media Love Manifesto, I have found less to write about on my blog, and my position in the Advertising Age Power 150 list of media blogs, the only ranking I watch, has slid gradually downward.

I’m a writer, and I try to choose my words carefully. That’s why I called this “My Social Media Love Mainfesto.” I wrote it for me, and I intend to give it a try. If you like it, feel free to use it.
