Incandescent

Although incandescent lamps are more frequently used in residential lighting applications, some commercial lighting fixtures also used this technology. Incandescent lamps pass current through a filament, which causes the filament to give off light. Because they are relatively short lived, incandescents are used mostly as decorative commercial lighting fixtures. Their ability to render warm colors effectively without ballast makes them well suited to this application, and the enormous variety of bulb designs make them highly soft after source of any type of accent lighting or decorum based commercial lighting design.

Fluorescent

Fluorescent lamps are used extensively in commercial lighting fixtures for a number of reasons. First and foremost of these reasons is their ability to use less power than other commercial lighting fixtures, making them very cost effective from an energy conservation perspective. Fluorescent bulbs also produce a very bright light that is evenly distributed, making them ideal commercial warehouse lighting fixtures, canopy lights, security lights, in interior retail lights in discount stores where high levels of general lighting help psychologically motivate larger bulk purchases of discount merchandise.

Fluorescent bulbs produce light by activating phosphors on the interior of the bulb using ultraviolet energy generated by a mercury arc. Ballast helps start and operate the fluorescent lamps by regulating electron flow through the gaseous arc. Trends in fluorescent technology have made them more compact, increasing lumens per watt efficiency as high as 100 lumens per watt, and reducing the amount of toxic mercury within the bulbs interior. Fluorescent commercial lighting fixtures are best deployed underneath building eaves (as in the case of canopy lights), near loading docks, in wallpacks on the sides of buildings, or as large grocery store or warehouse lights. Placing them too far out into open spaces tends to diffuse their light output and diminish their intensity.

High Intensity Discharge (HID) Commercial Lighting Fixtures

HID stands for High Intensity Discharge. It refers to a technology where light is produced by a gaseous arc discharge using a variety of elements. Typical elements include mercury vapor, metal halide, and high pressure sodium. The arc tube within an HID lamp will contain one or more of such elements, and when current passes between the electrodes at either end of the tube, the current creates an arc that generates visible light.

HID lamps feature the highest efficiency in lumens per watt output and also feature a greater level of lighting control. They also last longer than other commercial lighting fixtures, making them a wise investment for a company on a Spartan budget that cannot afford to continually replace equipment.

High intensity discharge sources include mercury vapor, metal halide, and high pressure sodium (HPS) lamps. Light is produced in HID and low pressure sodium (LPS) sources through a gaseous arc discharge using a variety of elements. Each HID lamp consists of an arc tube which contains certain elements or mixtures of elements which, when an arc is created between the electrodes at each end, gasify and generate visible radiation.

Light Sources and Lamp Characteristics:

Mercury Vapor (MV)

Mercury vapor lights were the first HID commercial lighting fixtures developed. They were designed originally to meet a rising demand for a very compact, high output, and energy efficient source of light. They are used extensively in a number of landscape lighting applications, being commonly deployed as tree lights in high-end commercial outdoor lighting systems. In other applications they have proven somewhat less effective duo to their inferior color rendering abilities, although this has improved to a certain extent over the years by phosphor coated interior bulb walls.

The life of mercury vapor lamps is good, averaging 24,000 hours for larger wattage lamps. However, because the output diminishes so greatly over time, economical operational life is often much shorter. Efficacy ranges from 30 to 60 lumens per watt, with the higher wattages being more efficacious than the lower wattages.

As with other HID lamps, the starting of a mercury vapor lamp is not immediate. Starting time is short, though, taking 4-7 minutes to achieve maximum output depending upon the ambient temperature.

High Pressure Sodium (HPS)

High Pressure Sodium (HPS) commercial lighting fixtures gained huge popularity in the 1970's to meet the needs of a powerful, yet super efficient, source of HID lighting. Lumens per watt output in an HPS lamp can be as high as 140 lumens per watt-approximately 7 times the luminance as incandescent lamps and twice that of MV or Fluorescent. They also last for approximately 24,000 hours---the longest lamp light on the market.

The problem with HPS commercial lighting fixtures has always been the quality of light they create. HPS lamps give off a yellowish or orange-tinted color and are not acceptable light sources for situations where illuminating a brand, architectural keynote, or any type of ornate exterior landscaping requires a high level of color rendering. For the most part, they are used in applications such as commercial parking garage lighting, warehouse lighting, and certain outdoor applications such as security flood lighting.

Metal Halide (MH)

Metal Halide (MH) commercial lighting fixtures are fast becoming the preferred source of HID lighting in most commercial environments. This is because they produce a very bright white light that nearly equivalent to daylight in its color rendering ability. The variety of applications is significant as a result, ranging from decorative street lighting, commercial parking lot lighting, car lot lighting, outdoor landscape lighting, architectural lighting, security lighting, and general site lighting. Traditionally, their biggest drawback has been their short lamp life-only 7,500 hours on the average.

Newer designs in Metal Halide commercial lighting fixtures include pulse start technology and ceramic metal halide design. These improvements have increased lumens per watt efficiency, control of the light itself through superior dimmability, better stability of color rendering, longer lamp life, and shorter start time.

Unfortunately, recent legislation has called for the phase out of certain standard forms of MH commercial lighting fixtures due to their use of incendiary elements that fall under the classification of greenhouse gas sources. This in turn paves the way for the most sophisticated lighting ever developed on our world, and quite possibly, the singular source of lighting used both commercially and residentially in the very near future: LED commercial lighting fixtures.

LED Commercial Lighting Fixtures

As technology improves, the ability to create truly "white" led light continues to evolve. LED commercial lighting fixtures are featuring higher lumens per watt efficiencies than their initial prototypes initially offered. This has opened the door for a number of architectural lighting and site lighting applications that were previously the exclusive domain of HID commercial lighting fixtures.

We are also seeing an upsurge in the use of led commercial lighting fixtures in street and roadway lighting, where a number of municipalities in the United States and Europe have reported some very promising findings in regards to both power cost reduction and the overall quality of street lighting itself.

Know About Leg Exercises for Women

Starting Position: - Hold a dumbbell in each hand and allow them to hang down at your sides. Stand with your feet shoulder width apart, toes pointed slightly outward. Distribute your body weight equally between both feet. Movement: - Inhale, keeping your heels in contact with the floor at all times, slowly lower into a squat position. Exhale as you slowly straighten your legs, keeping your head and chest up, returning to the starting position. Repeat as required. 5 lb dumbbells work well, but you can start with 2 lbs and then work your way up to 5 lbs within 3-5 weeks.

Lunges: Front Thigh Exercise. Starting Position: – Assume a standing position with your feet slightly less than shoulder width apart. Grasp a barbell with a wider than shoulder width grip and place it across your shoulders. Movement: – Inhale, keeping your back vertical and slightly arched, slowly step forward with one leg making a long stride, lowering your body down slowly until your rear knee lightly touches the floor (if you cannot go as low as this, then work your way up to it over 2-3 weeks). Exhale and shift your weight backwards, taking one step (or 2-3 small steps if that sounds difficult) to return to the starting position. Repeat on the other side. Remember to consult your doctor before this or any other knee exercises if you have had any knee trouble!

Be sure to carry out all exercises for your thigh muscles in a slow, controlled manner to avoid injury and to ensure the effectiveness of the thigh exercises. A certified personal trainer or professional fitness instructor can teach and assist you with the proper technique and form with any of these thigh exercises.

Then set goals, be consistent, and work until you are tired. While many theories exist on the best ways to build muscle, recent research indicates that a single set of 12 repetitions with the proper weight can build muscle just as efficiently as three sets of the same exercise — good news for people trying to squeeze weight or strength training into a busy schedule. It is recommended to do a single set of exercises using a weight heavy enough to tire the muscles after a dozen repetitions. When you work a muscle to fatigue, you are releasing factors that build endurance and strength.

The truth is, toning and firming up your leg, hip and thigh area is not achieved by using all those weight machines, and heavy dumbbells and barbells that could get you all pumped up with much more muscle than you were looking to build, or cause serious, long term injuries!

Place your hands on your hips or hold them out in front of you, or out to the side. slowly, step down with your left foot & lightly touch the floor with your toes & the ball of the foot (keep your heel off the ground).

There are 3 gluteal muscles. You have heard of the gluteus maximus which is the largest muscle in your body. There is also the gluteus minimus and medius. The group is often referred to as the glutes.

The primary function of the glutes is to extend your hip but they have many other functions such as leg abduction which is moving your leg away from your body to the side.

6 Steps to Finish Your Basement - Fix Your Concrete Flooring First

Do you have a wet basement? Or do you have a continuing problem with a mustly odor there? Would you simply like to use your basement, but are afraid to put anything valuable down there?

Moisture problems are prevalent all over North America. They are viewed as one of the single largest factors limiting the useful service life of a building. Wet basements are the most frequent complaint of homeowners. Over 60 percent of basements have moisture leakage and 38 percent experience mold and fungus growth due to an elevated level of moisture.

When your basement leaks in storms, or has cracks from stresses of your foundation, you may find that it is risky to store any valuables in this area. Much less make a livable space from it.

All your home should be livable, comfortable, enjoyable. Not just the upstairs. Take these simple steps to reclaim and finish your basement.

You have to start with the floor first, as floor moisture will promote mold and decay of any wall work or furniture over time.

1) Check for moisture. The common method discussed is to take a plastic trash bag or a piece of plastic drop cloth and spread it over a dry section of the basement floor (at least 1-foot by 1-foot). Using duct or masking tape, tape all four sides to the concrete, so no air can escape from under the plastic. Let it sit for 24 hours. If it's wet on top, this is probably from condensation. But pull the bag up, and inspect the concrete underneath. If the concrete is damp, you have a moisture seepage problem and the concrete cannot be sealed. If it's dry, then you can simply chip the cracks and fill with a concrete patch. Hairline cracks should be chiseled out 3/4" deep and wide and filled with a concrete patching material. Any cracks in the floor should also be chiseled out and repaired with standard concrete and a bonding agent. Trowel smooth, let dry per instructions, and then paint with an expoxy-based paint - most hardware stores carry it as a garage floor paint.

2) If you have moisture coming from the floor, you have to take additional steps. What will work depends on whether the moisture problem is something that has always been a problem or a recent thing caused by a particular year's excessive rainfall. Often, cleaning gutters and routing downspouts away from the house can resolve the problem. If the excess rain caused it, wait until the moisture dries up and keep a dehumidifier in the room.

3) While you are outside looking after your gutters, also look to see if any of the ground around your house is sloping toward it. In these cases, water will run toward your basement walls and collect there, infiltrating into the house. In good weather, bring in additional fill dirt into these areas so that the water flows away from the house. Keep this below the actual siding to avoid other problems later. You may also want to get a professional to inspect your grounds, as drainage tile may be suggested. The point is to ensure water is draining away from the house, not toward it.

4) If you have a sump pump, make sure it's working properly.

5) If you find condensation, or sweating, on cool surfaces in the basement such as walls, floors, and water pipes, you should insulate the water pipes.

6) Another culprit of indoor humidity is solved by using ventilation fans in kitchens and baths to control moisture. Make sure the fans are venting directly outside. Make sure your clothes dryer is being vented outside - also, check the vent duct and make sure it's attached securely to the dryer.

If you've completed the above steps, repeat the test before you attempt to paint or finish the floor. Hopefully, you've solved the problem and can proceed with your renovation steps. Seal the floor, work out what flooring you want and the wall treatments, as well as overhead and lighting. You're on your way, now!

But - if you still have more moisture coming in, it's probably time to call in a professional to check your basement and foundation for other problems. They can advise you on the best and least expensive way to resolve your moisture problem.

Either way, confronting this early will give you a "hand up" in finally reclaiming that space and making it livable.

Caring For Your Acrylic Aquarium Kit - Here’s How To Do It

Aquariums came into vogue around late 1800's. Those days’ aquariums were crudely made, with metal
or wood. They had three sides of wood or metal and only one side made out of glass. These ancient aquariums mostly had fish which came from the same region as its owner because only local species
were available then. Only fresh water fish could be housed in these aquariums as salt water corroded the metal frame of the aquarium that held the four panes together.

With the advent of silicone adhesive in the 1960's, there was a complete change in the way aquariums were made. Metal frames existed no more and people were able to keep salt water
invertebrates and salt water fish. The latest invention is the use of acrylic instead of glass
tank material. Acrylic is greatly flexible. This fact made the acrylic aquariums break-proof as
compared to their glass counterparts. With glass aquariums, there was the danger that some heavy
object could strike and shatter the glass tank, scattering the water and the fish alike all over,
leading to the death of the fish. The possibility of this happening is nullified owing to the
flexible nature of acrylic tanks. Even for designing the aquarium using acrylic, the possibilities
are mind boggling. You can turn your coffee table into acrylic aquarium and so also your gum ball
machine.

Like everything, acrylic aquariums also have their pros and cons. The cons consist of easy
scratch ability of the acrylic as compared to glass. You need to be very careful while cleaning
your aquarium and avoid the use of paper towels or abrasive and harsh chemicals as they would
scratch the surface of the acrylic aquarium. You must use a special cleaner labeled safe for
acrylic. Even scrubbers need to be of rubber or plastic, rather than metal which are used to clean the acrylic sides of the tank. Special care must be taken not to pick up any piece of gravel or
substrate while cleaning the tank from inside. However, even if accidentally scratches appear in
an acrylic aquarium, there is no need to despair. There's always a way out. The aquarium can be
repaired, unlike its glass counterpart. Acrylic repair kits are available at your local store of
hardware, specialty pet stores or online.

You have a wide variety to choose from when you go to purchase your acrylic aquarium kit and the
prices will also vary. You can purchase aquarium kits from retail, or aquatic specialty pet
stores, or even online. Fish lovers can take their pick from cute little cylinder shaped aquariums
that serve as lamps for your coffee table to huge wall to wall aquariums. Although there will be
some common basic things with most kits, such as substrate or coral, a filter, even lighting, there can be a great variety in kits themselves. You may purchase your starter kit from anywhere, but do remember that it is very very important to buy the Fish From a dealer who is reputed because fish
diseases are easily communicable. You need to ensure that you are buying healthy fish. Don't go
for fish that hover at the surface or from a tank which has other dead fish. Beware of a fish
trader who refuses to take out a specific fish from the aquarium for you. After all, you have a
right to be selective when you are taking home your fish.
