Aquarium Tank Basics

Any new aquarium tank should first be given a thorough test to ensure that it is watertight. If after 12 hours there are no leaks, it may be emptied and placed in its final position.

Now all is ready to set up the aquarium, for this work we shall require various items such as sand, rocks etc. These will be death with in order. For making a bottom soil, you need, first of all some sand, the most suitable is called 1/16th grade and it is about the size of the average pin-head:

The gravel to be used must also be graded; that is, the gram must be of uniform size. Sand and gravel’s sold in aquarium supply stores are always graded, but if you buy elsewhere they may not be. Gravel grains 2-5mm work best.

If you use nothing, but sand, it must be well washed-in buckets, under running water until no more dirt or foam comes to the surface - and spared out on the bottom of the tank in a layer running from 3- 6cm thick sloping upwards from front to back. If you decide to mix the sand with gravel to make at least a layer 6cm deep on top of the sub gravel filter since less than this amount reduces the filtering capacity of the tank.

Your tank is the basic element, and is of the most important in building an aquarium. The size of the tank depends on the number and size of fish you plan to have in it. That is why proper planning is quite essential when you want to set up aquarium.

But then it is important to make it as big as you can afford. By all means avoid a globe tank as much as possible. Rectangle shape is always good because of various reasons you will discover later.

Option 1: You can buy readymade glass tanks already sealed professionally set up aquarium tank at any aquarium store.

Option 2: Buy ready-made plastic models through distributors or mould-extrusion manufacturers and put your aquarium tank together yourself. Below are the tools you need and the steps you need to take to set up completely new aquarium tank:

Tools:

- Sheet of glass (4mm to 12mm)

- Silicone sealant (clear and transparent)

- Silicone gun or (syringe)

- Dulling stove

- Tape rule

- Sheet of paper, ruler, pencil and eraser

- napkin (x2)

- newspaper

- hand glove (rubber type)

- methylated spirit

- blade

- knife

- toilet soap and soap case

- masking tape

- flat bench (made with plywood)

- 1/4 flash

- water and siphon hose

- buckets (x2)

- polythese sheet about the size of the table

Other than that, I'll give you my 12 essential aquarium tips below is a great start on your way to having a beautiful aquarium full of happy and health fish that you can be proud of:

1. Location of the tank in a spot which is draft free and has a moderate amount of light for 8 to 10 hours. This will ensure the safety of the tank and the inhabitants.

2. Location of the aquarium tank where water spillage a day will do no damage, at a height convenient for working, and in a place where it will not have to be moved.

3. Proper sand gravel (not too large, not too fine).

4. Conditioned water - free of chlorine, dirt, excess hardness, excess acidity, or excess alkalinity. Hard, acidic, dirty water is not suitable for an aquarium. It will make life uncomfortable for fish and leads to constant fish death.

5. Availability of plants properly place is highly essential.

6. Proper, even temperature for the fish species.

7. Decoration and furnishing if you desire them.

8. Aeration to supply additional oxygen.

9. Filtration to remove excesses waste products.

10. Fish which will live peacefully together.

11. Food to keep them health.

12. Kits and utensils to make maintenance easy.

Aquarium Pumps Explained - Basics Of Using Them

Though it is not necessary to have an aquarium pump it is still useful as it provides lots of oxygen to the fish. The pump is attached to a long stone which has many small holes in it and is connected by a lengthy tube. Bubbles are created in the water by the pump which provides lots of oxygen to the fish.

The bubbles created provide an attractive look to the aquarium. Aquarium pumps come as decorative pieces like treasure chests which open. Aquarium pumps may also come in the form of statuettes, and maybe even pirates, to give your home aquarium a better look! These pumps are expensive but are worth installing in an aquarium and are easily available. When
you buy a pump make sure that the tube is of special plastic. Some types of plastic will begin to fade and may even react after being exposed to water at a specific temperature. Make sure the paint(if on the statue or tube) is non-toxic. These are very vital for maintainence of the health of the fish.

Aquarium pumps though expensive are quite easy to buy. A pump can be sued for decorative purposes and for generating oxygen. Some fishes like cichlids do not like too many bubbles in their surroundings like most fishes and pumps can be used as decorative pieces in the glass tanks.

When you buy a pump for your aquarium just make sure that you get not only the statue but also the hose and the free plug socket that goes with it. Large amount of power is used by aquariums and this will add to the greens of your electric bills. Maintain the statue and the long rock along with the pump well and prevent blockages to allow the free flow of bubbles. This will ease things out with its working and you can use it for alonger time than made for. Clean the pump regularly to prevent blockages. Blockages can be damaging to your aquarium over a few days of its presence and it can even kill them if you are not the keen observer of your fish. They prevent easy entry of oxygen into the water and thus suffocate the fish.

Choosing a Glass Or an Acrylic Fish Tank

What are the benefits of acrylic fish tanks?

Using acrylic to make fish tanks changed the aquarium keeping hobby for everybody. In the 1800's, fish tanks were mainly metal boxes with one side made out of glass. Aquarists could only keep Fish From their own region because they were the only ones available, and they had to be fresh water fish because salt water corroded the metal frame that held the panes together.

When silicone adhesive appeared into the picture in the 1960's, metal frames ceased to exist and gave way to glass and people were able to keep salt water fish in their aquariums.

Then came acrylic. Acrylic is greatly flexible and made aquariums break-proof, unlike their glass counterparts. With glass fish tanks there is always the danger of shattering the glass if stroke with a heavy object, creating a big mess of water and fish all over the place. Acrylic tanks don't run this danger

The possibilities of design with acrylic are endless. You can turn anything from an old television set to a gum ball machine into a fish tank.

Acrylic fish tanks are very lightweight. Especially if you compare them to glass tanks, acrylic tanks are very light. Of course, when you put the water in it, the tank is going to be very heavy, but the transportation of the tank will be much easier. Acrylic tanks are also very clear. The visibility of the fish will be much better than with glass.

Another advantage of acrylic tanks is the variety of shapes you can find! Bow front aquariums are my favorite. They look so much nicer then regular rectangular tanks. You can get the tiniest tank for your favorite Betta fish or a gigantic aquarium for your wall. I personally like to buy everything separate, but you can purchase a starter kit that has everything from gravel, plastic plants, lights and filters.

Obviously, acrylic aquariums also have their problems.

Acrylic can scratch easier than glass. You have to be very careful when cleaning your tank and use only supplies made especially for acrylic. Scrubbers have to be made of rubber or plastic and never metal. Be very careful not to pick up a piece of gravel with your sponge and scratch the surface of the tank with it.

However, if you accidentally scratch your acrylic tank, there is no need to despair. Acrylic tanks can be repaired. There are acrylic repair kits available.

When you get the occupants for your new tank

Only make sure to buy your fish from reputable specialty fish stores. Fish bought at regular pet shops normally carry diseases and won't last you long. And, it's always good to be able to ask questions about their care from someone knowledgeable. Look at the tanks. There shouldn't be any dead fish floating around. Choose the most energetic fish you see and have the employee give you the one you choose. After all, that fish will be your pet for many years to come.

Red - Eared Sliders Tank - Housing Requirements

Red-eared Sliders are one of the species of turtles most commonly kept as pets, so we do well to focus on how to meet the requirements that this breed has. In this article I want to focus on their housing/habitat needs-and in particular what comprises an ideal Red-eared Slider tank. Contrary to the mistaken notion some people have, these turtles cannot simply be kept in a fishbowl. They are, after all, semi-aquatic animals. For this same reason, although they breathe air and dwell on land part time they cannot be kept in a box without water to swim in.

An outdoor pond in your back yard makes an ideal habitat for these turtles, that is, if you live in the southern part of the United States where Red-eared Sliders naturally live in the wild-but for most pet-owners, a rectangular glass aquarium kept in the house is more practical. You can regulate the temperature year-round and also observe their antics close up through the glass walls. Glass tanks are preferable over plastic tanks for two reasons. One: like most turtles, this breed has sharp claws which will scratch plastic; two: glass is much easier to clean when you routinely dump out the fouled water and wipe the sides of the aquarium before pouring in fresh water.

Even though a baby turtle will be small, it's best to not buy a small, cheap aquarium. Red-eared Sliders grow rapidly during their first years and while some do not grow much more than 5 inches, some fully-grown adults will measure 10-12 inches in length. It is recommended that you have a minimum of a 30-gallon tank for a 5-inch adult. A 10-inch adult will require a 55-gallon tank. Bigger is always better, and if you have two or more turtles, you will require a larger tank still.

Since Red-eared Sliders require warm temperatures to turn on their immune system and stay healthy, it is vital that you maintain a water temperature of 75-86 degrees F. (20-29 degrees C.). The easiest and most practical method of maintaining a stable temperature is to use a submersible heater. Such heaters have a built-in thermostat which you simply set to a certain temperature.

The tank top should ideally be designed so as not to obstruct too much natural light from entering the tank. There are a variety of designs, and some tank tops come with a fluorescent Reptile light already attached. A full spectrum ultraviolet light (UVA and UVB) is important if the tank is not in a place where it can get enough natural light. Sliders must have sufficient UV rays to enable them to properly process the nutrients in their food. (Note: it is not good to have the turtle's tank exposed to direct sunlight as overheating will result.)

It's vital that you have a good filtration system. Your turtle will pass urine and feces directly into the water he swims in, and since this will increase the bacteria count in the water, this has a direct and adverse effect on the health of your pet. A good filtration system will filter out these pollutants and will also mean that you won't have to do a complete cleaning of your turtle tank as often. (A tank with no filter must be have the water drained and be cleaned weekly.) As for what kind of filtration system, most turtle owners recommend a Fluval 403 filter.

Turtles require a basking area up out of their swimming water where they can bask and soak up the heat of the lamp. A pile of flat stones is commonly used. A cork bark "raft" or piece of driftwood also works. The temperature of the basking area should be 85-90 degrees F. near the fluorescent bulb.

It is fine to put decorative plants in your turtle tank; just be aware that your pet may attempt to eat them. For this reason, be sure that the plants you choose are not poisonous to turtles. Plastic plants are also not advised, as your pet may attempt to eat those as well. As for gravel, make sure that the stones are not small enough for the turtle to swallow.

Setting up a Fish Tank Aquarium

It can be fun to set up a fish tank aquarium but as in all hobbies it pays to do some research before you start. Before you purchase any fish you need to cycle the tank correctly to ensure that there are sufficient bacteria to cope with the waste products of your fish. We recommend a fishless cycling method detailed below.

Choosing the Tank

Fish tank aquariums can be purchased in glass or acrylic. Glass tanks are cheaper, are heavier and occasionally spring leaks. Acrylic tanks are more expensive, rarely leak, come in a variety of shapes but do scratch easily. Acrylic tanks usually last longer than glass tanks.

Fish Tank Shape

Acrylic tanks come in a variety of shapes including cylinder, hexagon, octagon and round as well as the traditional rectangular shape. There are also wall tanks and coffee table tanks. The traditional rectangular shape is still the best however as the water volume to surface area is a maximum giving good gas exchange. For other shapes, with smaller water volume to surface area ratio, maintenance will be higher and more frequent water changes will be needed.

In general buy the largest tank that will fit where you will be placing it and you can afford. A larger tank requires less maintenance and you can fit in more fish without risking overcrowding.

Fishless Cycling Method

Requirements

Ammonia, nitrite and nitrate testing strips

Bacteria culture from an established tank - this can be some filter material or some gravel

Alternatively use a commercial preparation such as Colonize by Dr Foster & Smith or Biospira by Marineland
Unscented ammonia

Method

After adding the bacteria culture to your newly set up tank add 5 drops of ammonia for every ten gallons of water. Test for ammonia. If nothing registers add a few more drop until you get a reading. Continue to add the same amount every day until you can detect nitrites in the tank. Now add half the amount of ammonia daily until nitrate registers on the testing strip. At this point the nitrite levels should start to drop. When they reach zero the tank is cycled. Do a 30% water change and you are ready for your fish.

Carefully research the types of fish that can be kept together. Community fish are those that live peacefully with each other. All the fish listed below are suitable for a tropical community fish tank.

Carefully inspect the fish tanks at the pet shop to make sure the fish look healthy and no dead fish are in the tanks. Research the fish you will be buying carefully and check up on their temperature and water quality requirements. Tropical fish will need a higher temperature than goldfish. Some fish are relatively peaceful when young but are bullies when fully grown. Tiger barbs are good examples of these.

Always avoid overcrowding. You will need a larger tank for bigger fish. For angel fish never use a tank smaller than ten gallons. After purchase never introduce fish to an established tank but quarantine in a separate tank for at least a week to ensure you do not introduce disease organisms into you tank.
