Aquariums at home are said to be the best stress reliever. Aquriums can be big or small depending on the maintainence and care possible at home. There are two types of aquariums –fresh atre aquariums and salt water aquariums. The salt water aquariums are difficult to maintain than the fresh water aquariums as the ecology of the salt water acquarium differs and needs to be handled and taken care of wiith proper knowledge.

Salt water aquarium looks more beautiful, appealing and colorful for the simple reason it can have wide range of fishes and mammals, live corals, anemones, crustaceans or jelly fish. You can also keep some extravagantly colored reef fishes to enhance the beauty of the aquarium and the movement inside the aquarium looks vibrant and colorful. Some popular salt water fishes are Comical blenny, Angelfish, Clown fish, Blue lined triggerfish and Damsels and can be kept in salt water aquariums.

Some skilled and advanced aquarists keep squids and octopuses which creates an exact replica of the marine life at your desired place. The variety of fishes and marine life which can choosen to make the aquarium more vivacious and full of life is the main reason of its popularity

Before going for a salt water aquarium it is always better to study and research the ecosystem of salt water fishes, their food habits, the environment and surroundings conducive for their growth and development and the water temperature required for their survival. The extra time devoted for the study and research and knowing the exact requirement will prove beneficial in the long run as starting a salt water aquarium will definitely prove to be a gratifying experience.

To start with you will require a fish tank, Substrates, Filtration System, Heater or Thermometer, power head, protein skimmer, air pump and water pump. Whereas you can chose any one of the basic forms of salt water aquarium. Either you can go for the fish only, Fish with Live Rock or Reef system.

Salt water Aquarium Dos and Don’t

• The aquarium should be at least of 200litres as smaller one will have a problem of maintaining water quality and balance.

• The material of the aquarium should to be either in glass or acrylic.

• The location should not be in too much or too little sunlight. Excess sunlight will result in the growth of algae and too little sunlight will also be harmful. Always maintain a constant temperature.

• Make sure that the decoration kept, in the aquarium is salt proof otherwise it may poison your aquarium.

• Filter the aquarium whenever required. The filtration processes are mechanical filtration, biological filtration and chemical filtration.

• Don’t use ordinary salt water in your aquarium. Always use aquarium salt water available in fish store and mix in water following the proper instruction.

• The cleaning should never be done with detergent and soap as they pollute the water and harm the ecosystem. A capful of pure bleach added to 10 gallons of water will do the needful. Then clean it with fresh water afterwards.

• To maintain balance between the salts and water levels it is very essential to use a hydrometer. The water from the aquarium keeps evaporating buy the level of salt remains the same. To compensate the level of evaporated water salt water is not required. But to know the exact salinity of water Hydrometer is very helpful and will help you to add water as per requirement.

How to Clean Hard Water Stains on Home Aquariums

Watching home aquariums is fun, there is really no doubt about that, but when your aquarium glass is already accumulating white stains, you know you have to remove these stains unless you really like not enjoying your livestock due to stalled vision. Good thing that there are ways to chip off hard water stains on your aquariums, and this article will try to discuss some of the most effective ways.

Hard water stains are actually lime deposits caused by the hardness of the water based on the area where you took your aquarium water. Anyway, you really do not need to worry about these stains hurting your livestock because they are practically harmless mineral deposits in the water. The only problem about these stains is the fact that your aquarium looks dirty with them around, and for the decorative purposes of your house, you would not like that to happen to your fish tank.

The thing you ought to first try out is to scrape the stains away from your home aquariums. An aquarium scrubber can do this job pretty well or razor blades for more effective scraping. The great this about this technique is that you do not need to take out your fishes from your tank and you would not need worry about harming your fish. About Coated Lense Binoculars

Binoculars consist of numerous air to glass surfaces with each individual surface contributing to the loss of light. Coated lense binoculars help prevent the loss of light with one or more of the surfaces being coated with one or more layers of anti-reflective coating. Never buy binoculars with uncoated lenses, the lack of coating means that around 50% of light could be lost making non coated lense binoculars half as bright as their coated counterparts.

Coated lense binoculars used to come with a hefty price tag but now most binoculars come with coated lenses in one form or another and top quality fully multi-coated lense binoculars are often within the price range of many users.

The greater the number of coatings and the more surfaces that are coated the less light is lost so if you are looking for the best binoculars you want fully multi-coated lenses.

There are basically four grades of coated lense binoculars although some manufacturers have developed their own, exclusive, high quality coatings which offer greater durability and further improved light transmission with other added advantages:

• Coated lense binoculars means that one or more surfaces are coated with one layer of anti-reflective coating. If only one or a limited number of air to glass surfaces are coated such binoculars will provide you little more light transmission than un-coated lense binoculars.

• Fully coated lense binoculars means that air to glass surfaces are coated with one layer of anti-reflective coating.

• Multi coated lense binoculars means that one or more air to glass surfaces are coated with multiple layers of anti-reflective coating. Like coated lense binoculars you have to be careful here as just one surface could be coated!

• Fully multi coated lense binoculars are the best that you can buy. All air to glass surfaces are coated in multiple layers of anti reflective coating.

Fully coated lense binoculars can increase light transmission from 50% to around 80 - 85% which is now the norm for low cost binoculars. If you want something a bit more special that will increase light transmission to 95% or above then you want to go for fully multi coated lense binoculars and, for extra durability and advance quality viewing, take a look at the exclusive coatings offered by some of the top manufacturers. Aquarium Glass - Great Facts Aquarium Owners Must Know

Aquariums have to be made of toughened glass because this glass has to bear a lot of pressure with a full tank of water, accessories and the fish. If the glass is not strong enough it can just give way and all the fish and everything in the tank will end up on the floor. The glass is also very heavy and there is no way anyone can pick it up once it is filled up with water and fish etc. This is the reason that an aquarium stand is used, and the tank should be put on this and then filled up. Glass fish tanks are available in various sizes and shapes too. If you want a table top one you can get a fairly small one, but if you have space enough for a large one you can stand it on an aquarium stand and opt for the bigger sized ones. A lot depends on the space you have and the kind of fish you plan to keep in it.

The glass for an aquarium is thick and strong
Some of the aquariums are pretty large being almost nine to ten feet long and over 3 feet wide so you can imagine how much pressure there will be on it with that amount of water. Though the glass is sealed on the sides it still has to be very strong and thick so that it does not crack with the pressure and spill the contents out. For the safety of the people around and the fish in the tank the glass is made as strong as possible.

Acrylic fish tanks
Acrylic is twice as strong as glass and yet weighs much less. Fish tanks made of acrylic are much stronger than those made of glass. When heated acrylic can be moulded into any shape and this way you can get a fish tank of any shape made of acrylic and further more as the edges do not have to be sealed this tank is much stronger than one made of glass. However glass fish tanks are still more popular and not many go in for acrylic tanks.

The glass aquariums are pretty expensive but easily available and you could have one built to suit the size and shape you want, you do not have to buy one off the shelf only but can have it made to order. Of course if you can build your own tank then nothing like it, but you have to make sure that it is made strong enough.

Using a Uv Sterilizer in a Reef Tank

Actually, a UV sterilizer can be used in either a salt water reef aquarium or a salt water fish only aquarium.

What is the sterilizer? It is a container, usually in a near tube shape, in which an ultraviolet (UV) fluorescent lamp is contained. The lamp emits light at around 254 nm. The lamp is constructed of quartz glass to prevent the UV being absorbed as it would be if ordinary glass were used. The lamp is in a container of its own to shield it from the water, and then there is an outer container. The space between the containers is very small allowing full penetration of UV light. The water is passed between the outer and inner containers by a pump or power head.

The UV light is fully shielded from the aquarist as, of course, it could be damaging.

It is important that the unit used is recommended by the manufacturer for the size of aquarium it is to be fitted to, and very important that the pump used to circulate the water through the unit is of the correct size, again as recommended by the manufacturer. However, an aquarium cannot be “over UV’d” as the UV light is completely contained.

What does a UV sterilizer in a reef tank do? The major job of the unit as far as aquarists are concerned is the destruction of minute free swimming parasites and other disease causing organisms. This occurs when these organisms pass with the water through the UV light. They are either killed outright, or are severely damaged and no longer a threat. (This is the reason it is important to have the correct sized pump. The organism must be in the UV area for a sufficient time.) The threat of disease is reduced, but not entirely removed. Even with a sterilizer in use, the aquarist must continue to be on guard for any sign of disease.

A further very important point is that the UV lamp has a limited life. In accordance with the manufacturer’s recommendations, the lamp must be renewed periodically. This keeps the UV unit at full efficiency. The renewal point will occur more quickly if the unit is run continuously, but continuous running is not necessary in normal circumstances. However, it is probable that most aquarists do run continuously. When feeding small live food that could be drawn into the UV unit turn the unit off.

The UV unit must be run continuously if a disease is suspected or confirmed. Many disease organisms have a free swimming stage and it is at this point that they are vulnerable.

It can be seen that the UV unit is of most potential benefit on a reef aquarium, or a fish only with live rock aquarium, as copper medication should not be used in these aquariums. A fish only aquarium can also benefit, but if a severe disease outbreak occurs medications can normally be used.

It is likely that a disease outbreak will not occur in an aquarium if all the proper procedures for introducing new corals and fish are used, and proper maintenance is adhered to. It is for the individual aquarist to decide if a UV unit is worthwhile.

Just remember that a UV unit is not an excuse for poor husbandry or cutting corners!
