My Social Media Love Manifesto

Quick, what single word that comes to mind when you try to describe social media? Authenticity? Immediacy? Participation?

What about meanness?

It seems the best way to drive traffic to your blog is to write that something or someone is:

Lame

Dead

Irrelevant

Clueless

It’s the social media version of the Mad Libs game. Title your blog post “[proper noun] is [adjective from above list]!” and watch the comments roll in!

The problem with this game is that often, innocent, or mostly innocent people are caught in the crosshairs, and exposed to undeserved risk to reputation and career.

Certainly public condemnation is called for in many situations, but where do you draw the line? Gross ethical misconduct? Easy call. But what about a poorly thought out business model, a bad user interface, or a momentary, innocent lapse in judgment? Do these kinds of situations deserve the social media equivalent of the public beating in the town square? Or is it that the risk to reputation and career of harsh public criticism directed at specific individuals and companies is outweighed by the usefulness of this kind or reportage in helping others avoid the same mistakes?
There are several things that encourage negative behavior in social media. The first is the idea that a good blog is one that gets lots of visitors and lots of links. That’s good if you sell advertising on your blog or if your ego demands it. So we write provocative headlines and we take on sacred cows. Because (mixing a few metaphors here) social media is like a day at the race track: some people come just to see the crashes.

Another more subtle factor is the need some of us feel, and I include myself in this category, to offer our professional wisdom to others in the industry. It’s often easiest to do that by commenting on a case study. Case studies involve real, identifiable people and their behavior, so it’s hard to write about them without naming the people involved.

In my journalism school days, during the Coolidge administration, we talked about the dismal failure of “good news:” print and broadcast news outlets designed to balance the doom, gloom, death and depravity highlighted every night on the evening news. The truth is, for whatever reason, bad news sells.

When I write about something I’ve read relevant to social media, PR or corporate communications, I try to base my analysis on the facts, and to avoid character assassination. I tend to stay away from the big four adjectives above, although I did call a couple of people “weasels.”

Lately, I have been giving a lot of thought as to whether all of this negativity is really necessary, and whether there is another healthier, more useful way to carry on these discussions.

This all started a few weeks ago when I left a comment on a blog in which I was critical of someone’s professional conduct. I soon realized that while I thought I was participating in an academic discussion on social media ethics, I was in fact unfairly questioning the integrity of a fellow professional based on only a handful of facts (those included in the blog post.) I did two things I have never done before. I apologized to this person, and I asked the author of the blog to delete my comment.

I then wondered, is it possible to talk about hypothetical conduct to avoid criticizing specific individuals, or is it only through “real life” case studies that we can understand difficult concepts, particularly in the area of ethics? What kind of conduct merits public disclosure? Where do we draw the line when it comes to criticizing the thoughts and deeds of others?

I’m not sure what the answers are. I’m still working through it. Until I figure it out, I have for the most part stopped using case studies on my blog, and have stopped criticizing people as a way to make a point.

And to help me establish my own rules of engagement, I decided to write my Social Media Love Manifesto. Despite the evidence that “good news” and kindness are not big sellers, I thought I would give it a shot.

While many claim that Web 2.0 and social media have brought with them new and uncharted terrain, where etiquette is defining itself with each advance and new rules are being written every day, the line between the online world and the real world was largely erased a long time ago, and there is no longer any reason for two sets of moral and ethical guidelines.

The people we “meet” in our online interactions are real people. They probably own a computer or two, write a blog or participate in a social network, and through the social media filter we see only glimpses of them, but that does not mean that they are not real, or that we are in any way excused from treating them like any other person we would meet.

I have therefore resolved that when writing on my blog, or when using any other form of social media, when calling into question the conduct of a specific, identifiable person, I will:

Base my comments on the facts, and make reasonable efforts to gather all of the relevant facts before weighing in on a controversial discussion.

Weigh carefully the value of any comments I choose to make against the potential for harm.

And I will not:

Make assumptions about people’s motivations.

Generate controversy for its own sake.

Join others by superficially “piling on” when someone is under attack

I will always strive to:

Treat people online with the respect and kindness I would extend to a friend or colleague.

Take time regularly to leave a supportive comment on a blog or acknowledge someone positively in a public forum.

Maybe I’m naïve or foolish. If I come across as didactic, preachy or self-serving, I don’t mean to. But I’d like to think we could all be a little nicer. Since I have agreed to follow my Social Media Love Manifesto, I have found less to write about on my blog, and my position in the Advertising Age Power 150 list of media blogs, the only ranking I watch, has slid gradually downward.

I’m a writer, and I try to choose my words carefully. That’s why I called this “My Social Media Love Mainfesto.” I wrote it for me, and I intend to give it a try. If you like it, feel free to use it. If you want to add to it, leave me a comment. And if you don’t like it, feel free to tell me why, but please try to be nice about it.

USA Lottery; How Much Do You Know?

The state and multi-state lotteries in the US are among the most popular in the world. This is mainly because they have the greatest average jackpots in the world. As sales increase, so are the jackpots. USA lottery is run by individual jurisdictions. Majority of the states, totaling forty three, have amended their constitutions to make provisions for legal lottery. The existence of lotteries in the USA is subject to the laws of each jurisdiction. As such, there is no national lottery.

USA Lottery has come a long way

As early as nineteenth century, private lotteries were legal in the USA. As such, one needs not to worry about lottery in the USA. Quite a number of USA patents were granted on new types of lotteries which can today be considered business method patents. Many illegal lotteries thrived before the introduction of state sponsored lotteries. The USA lotto is today established in forty two states. The other states outside mainland USA like Puerto Rico, District of Columbia and Virgin Islands approved state lottery in 2008.

1964 saw the establishment of the first modern state lottery in the USA. This was in New Hampshire. Many modern lotteries have since been established in many states. The first modern interstate lottery was formed in 1985. This linked three of the New England states. Three years later, the Multi-State Lottery Association was formed with seven states as its charter members. The states included Kansas, Iowa, Missouri, Oregon, Rhode Island, District of Columbia and West Virginia.

This organization is famous for its Powerball drawing which was meant to establish very large jackpots. Another interstate lottery which is today being referred to as Mega Millions was established in 1966 by the states of Georgia, Michigan, Illinois, Massachusetts, Virginia and Maryland. New Jersey, Ohio, Washington, California and Texas joined these states later to make a total of twelve members.

Lottery goes high-tech

The instant lottery tickets that are also known as scratch cards have become a major source of state lottery avenue having been introduced in the nineteen-seventies. Some states have introduced keno and video lottery terminals which have also become popular. Cashola, Hot Lotto and Wild Card 2 are also some of the USA lotteries.

As such, any individual who desires to make millions through lottery has no reasons to worry since the majority of the states have established modern lotteries. Thirty percent of the global online and instant lottery business is administered by a USA Corporation. The USA lottery has had to keep up with the many challenges especially with regard to the prohibitive nature of online gaming rules which has made lottery games to face less scrutiny.

The result has been an increase in websites offering lottery ticket purchasing services that charge premiums on base lottery prices. The legitimacy of such services are questionable across the USA as the laws of gambling related to lottery play have generally not kept up with the spread of technology.

Where do the proceeds go?

Currently, the majority of USA lottery donates a substantial amount of their proceeds to the public education system. These funds however replace instead of supplement conventional funding. The consequence has been lack of additional money for education. With every ticket purchased, know that is directed towards a good course and the game is all legal.

How to Use a Whole House Iron Filter Cartridge to Treat Rusty Residential Well Water

Iron is one of the most common elements in the Earth's crust, so it is no surprise it finds it way into many home well waters. The maximum contaminant level (MCL) for iron set by the United States Environmental Protection Agency is 0.3 ppm. This can also be expressed as 0.3 milligrams per liter of water. In concentrations above 0.3 ppm, iron in water can cause staining of fixtures and porcelain, ruin laundry, and make the water taste terrible.

Manganese is often found with iron in well water. A bittersweet astringent taste is detectable at concentrations above 0.5 ppm by many people. Manganese causes brown, black and/or tea-color staining, and can impart an asphalt-like or oily taste, above .05 ppm. Some of the same filters used for iron, are used for manganese removal.

If the right sets of conditions are present, a whole house iron filter cartridge can be used in place of the standard backwashing iron filters. These iron filter cartridges cost less than a standard iron filter, but may cost more over a period of a few years, because the cartridges need to be changed frequently. Since they do not require backwashing, they are often used in situations where there is a shortage of well water. They are easier to install than backwashing iron filters and do not require electricity to operate.

Iron and manganese are often found in a dissolved state in well waters, and so your well water may appear clear when first drawn. Upon exposure to air, or after the addition of oxidants (such as air, chlorine bleach or ozone), this clear ferrous iron is oxidized (rusted) to the ferric state to form insoluble particles. A properly designed whole house iron filter will remove both types of iron.

After oxidation or exposure to air, the water then looks orange or yellow. If manganese is present, the water may turn brown or black. This can happen in toilet flush tanks and in the washing machine or dishwasher.

Iron is usually treated with automatic backwashing (self-cleaning) iron filters, which can remove both dissolved and oxidized iron compounds. If sulfur odor is present along with iron, typically chlorine or ozone is fed ahead of an iron filter. In some cases, a backwashing self-cleaning sediment filter can be used in place of an iron filter, if all the iron and manganese has been oxidized to a solid state after the chlorination, ozone injection or air injection process.

There are several different types of backwashing iron filters used, depending on the type and quantity of iron, and the application. Some iron filters, such as the greensand, pyrolox, and Birm filters use a type of manganese oxide media where oxidation takes place right on the filter media as the water passes through it.

Some iron filters use air injection. Often these systems are used after the water has been pretreated with aeration, chlorine or ozone. Birm iron filters work great for iron, but work less well on manganese, and cannot be used where the water contains sulfur odors, chlorine or low pH.

The role of pH is very important in iron treatment. Generally, if the pH of the water is acidic (or less than 7.0), it must be corrected with a special type of neutralizer filter ahead of the iron filtration system. It is usually best to test for pH right at the water source, and not depend on laboratory analysis for pH, since in some cases the pH can raise after sampling, giving false results.

Water softening is sometimes used to remove dissolved iron in low levels (less than 2.0 ppm) although more commonly, we use iron filters in conjunction with water softening if the water is both hard, and high in iron or manganese. Iron is generally not thought of as toxic, although there are some studies that show liver toxicity to men.

A whole house iron filter cartridge contains the same media found in backwashing iron filters (such as Birm, greensand, pyrolox etc). Instead of backwashing and being regnerated, and used over many years, the cartridge is used for a few months and disposed of.

These cartridges work best when the iron in the water is less than 3.0 ppm and the flow rate is less than 10 gallons per minute. For best results, the water should be chlorinated or aerated prior to the whole house filter. If the water comes from a storage tank or cistern then no further aeration is required. While the filters do remove low levels of hydrogen sulfide gas (rotten egg odor) generally it is not a good idea to use these cartridges filters if sulfur odor is present.

While whole house iron filter cartridges are a good choice for many on low flow applications such as summer homes, cottages or mobile homes, they do not replace a well-designed backwashing iron filter. Over a five year period for instance, a backwashing iron filter, which may cost $800 up front, will usually cost less than purchasing a replacement iron filter cartridge every few months for $80 to $100.
