Understanding Aquarium Lighting

Marine life is regarded as the most beautiful of all life forms in the universe. An aquarium with fish, invertebrates, and marine plants, is a glimpse of the astonishing beauty of our world's oceans. Taking time to learn about the right equipment, and care requirements will pay off.

One of the main factors to consider when selecting the right size aquarium depends on the livestock that you plan to keep. Several larger species of fish will need to have sufficient space to live and thrive in the aquarium. There are a variety of ready-made saltwater reef aquarium tanks in different shapes and sizes available, and with a little luck, finding a suitable one should not be hard. Remember to check online aquarium supply stores, which typically have a wider selection than local neighborhood fish stores.

Components to consider when setting up an aquarium may include a tank stand and hood. More importantly, what you need to decide is whether you want to start with a fish-only tank, or if you want a fish-only-with-live-rock tank (F.O.W.L.R.), or if you want a reef tank which may include live fish, live rocks, corals and invertebrates. One thing to bear in amind when setting up a Saltwater Aquarium is its placement, as you cannot shift it around once it's filled to capacity with water. Therefore, careful thought and planning must go into the decision of where the aquarium is to be finally placed.

Other major components will include the right type of filtration system for your tank. There are different types of filtration systems available, and it would be best to read about them before deciding which one to get. Your filtration apparatus, including Water Heater, pumps and protein skimmer, will be powered by electricity, so you must be prepared for a power outage. Fish may survive for a day without water circulation, which creates oxygenation. However, other marine life including corals, inverts and microorganisms that live within the live rock, will soon start to die. Therefore, a back-up power supply is a worthy investment.

You must select the right type of lighting for your saltwater aquarium. There is a wide variety of aquarium lighting to choose from, including metal-halide and compact-fluorescent, typically measured in "PAR" (Photosynthetically Active Radiation). Therefore, before purchasing, reading up on the various lamp types and lighting spectrums is recommended. Setting up the lighting is easy, once you understand the lighting that your particular aquarium inhabitants will need.

You will need to select a good quality synthetic salt, substrate, and live rock. There are different types of live rock available from different parts of the world, including Fiji and Tonga. Live rock is typically sold per pound, as cured or uncured. Cured is more expensive, because it has been cleaned and acclimated for immediate use in your aquarium.

Not all fish and invertebrates are compatible for living together in a saltwater aquarium. So before purchasing any marine life it is important to read about which are compatible together and which are not. In conclusion, you must do thorough research on saltwater aquariums, and how to care for the marine animals you intend to keep. Don't rush this process. Take your time. There may be some trial and error, but with time, you'll be rewarded with a beautiful piece of the ocean you'll be proud of.

The Gasification Boiler And Gasifier Advantages

Gasification in-situ with energy production or pyrolysis of the above mentioned residues, under a non-oxidizing atmosphere for alternative fuels production could be a solution to the environmental problems that land filling or conventional combustion could create.

There is a lot of gasification bioler development work underway at present. The current work in one study focuses on combustion and pyrolysis of cotton gin residues in Greece, as an alternative way of energy production.

In one recent trial of gasification technology gasification boiler operation has been put on a sound thermodynamic footing by the development work now completed. It has also been shown that, apart from its deleterious impact on thermal efficiency, the presence of water in mechanically-dewatered fuel (containing ~ 32 wt% solids) does not lead to significant particle disintegration compared with dried fuel. Gas trials have been staged using partial oxidation in three stages before final combustion. Nox emisssion rate was very well reduced from several thousand ppm to 25 ppm. Gasification in this system takes place in a fluidized bed formed above the slag bath and constituted by the dried sewage sludge or waste materials, the solid fuel, the oxygen-containing gas and the gasification gas. The gas produced in the gasifier can be used for power generation or for this example, as a reducing gas for iron ore.

In another study gasification of wide range of coals will be tested including biomass. Technology development will be based on: lab-scale experimental research using different coals, computer process simulation, demo-scale testing, plant configuration analysis for stepwise approach in respect of CO2 removal, system optimisation for power and chemicals production.

Gasifiers or boilers for gasification can frequently handle high fouling fuels without excessive slagging/fouling due to the lower temperatures at which they can operate in comparison with direct combustion units. Waste fuel gasification is going to be important as the cost of the refined product rises. This generally involves heating fuel in a gasification boiler in an oxygen-starved environment to produce a medium or low calorific gas.

Gasification of sewage sludge for heat and power generation in combined heat and power (CHP) applications is an attractive concept that provides an environmentally acceptable, efficient, and economically viable means of generating energy from a waste disposal problem. The final solid residues are pathogen-free but may contain toxic elements such as barium, copper, mercury, lead, and zinc at levels that could make their disposal to landfills costly as well as environmentally unsound. This is a concern which still needs addressing, but overall the problems also exist for other fuels and processes to a greater degree.

Gasification boiler gas emissions (syngas) is cleaned and then burned in internal combustion engines for the generation of electricity and process heat.

Sewage sludge wastes can also be coprocessed with coal to yield gas and liquid fuels or chemical feedstocks. This can be achieved with a wide range of other fuels and the pecific approaches quoted by the experimenters include:

- straw;

- wood wastes;

- plastics wastes;

- liquefaction of paper and papermaking wastes;

- waste tyres;

- oils, greases, and other waste-derived oragnic liquids;

- loaded rotary hearth furnace cokes

A number of plant modifications were necessary to accommodate these widely physically different feedstocks.

The gasification boiler (gasifier) generates a nearly uniform reaction front propagating upwards at a velocity of 0.77-0.87m/h. With a temperature of the reaction front maintained at 950-1050 degrees C. The gasifier, which resembles a stainless steel rocket, converts the carbon in the straw into a mixture of carbon monoxide and hydrogen gases known as “Syngas”.

The advantage of a gasifier is that it allows more efficient use of the fuel’s energy content and more even, controllable heat.

Gasification boilers have been used in the medical sphere for some time. The gasifier's stainless steel inside, from Rivers Medical Products, heats to around 850 degrees Celsius. The gasifier also features a rapid mix multi-port feed injector and actively cooled walls.

Some gasification boiler features are claimed to result in lower capital cost, higher efficiency, greater durability, higher availability, ability to handle low rank coal/lignite and better carbon conversion all resulting in a lower cost of electricity in associated IGCC plants. One gasifier-based dyeing oven quoted on the web, is said to save nearly 45% of the cost of fuel if it replaces a conventional biomass-burning oven and the savings are as high as over 60% if it replaces an oven using petroleum fuels. These aspects we have been told have compelled the operators to switch over to petroleum fuels from biomass fuels. If this is correct and we have no reason to think otherwise gasification will soon really take-off in ters of plant sales and volume of material including sewage sludge utilized.

Choosing the Right Dc Power Supply for Your Application

The DC Power Supply is a rather fundamental electronic device, however there are hundreds of DC Power Supply products on the market from dozen of manufacturers. Narrowing down the best product for your application and budget can be a daunting task. This article addresses DC Power Supply differentiators, functions and the applications they are best suited for. The article's focus is DC Power Supplies used by engineers, manufacturers, quality professionals and electronic hobbyists for the purposes of R&D, manufacturing and testing.

Power Supplies can range in price from $50 to $20,000 and the cost is often directly proportional to the amount of power the device outputs. The primary function of a power supply is to regulate output voltage and current. It takes an input power and regulates the output power as to enforce a constant voltage and current. In the case of DC Power Supplies, the input power is converted from alternating current (AC) to direct current (DC). There are two basic types of regulated DC Power Supplies: Linear and Switching.

Linear power supplies can never output a higher voltage than the input source. In theory, a linear power supply that is driven by typical 110V wall outlet could only output 110V, assuming the device were 100% efficient. Realistically, no power supply is 100% efficient because power conversion always results in energy loss, usually in the form of heat dissipation. Therefore, linear power supplies usually output voltage that is significantly less than the input.

Switching power supplies can step-up, step-down or invert the input voltage. Switching power supplies are usually larger, noisier and more expensive than their linear counterparts, however, switching power supplies are typically more efficient.

Choosing the right DC power supply for your application requires definition of some basic design specifications: voltage range, current range, number of outputs, power cleanliness (known as "ripple") and programmability. In general, the higher the output voltage and the lower the ripple, the more expensive the DC Power Supply. Multiple outputs and programmability features will also add to the cost.

The least expensive DC Power Supplies are ideal for electronics hobbyists and basic electro-mechanical applications where only raw power is required. It is likely that the devices being powered in these applications already have power-conditioning features that eliminate the need for precision input power. Low power, single output, DC power supplies range in price from $50 to $200.

Mid-range power supplies are best suited for non-critical, laboratory projects involving more advanced electro-mechanical applications or basic board-level testing. Mid-range power supplies might have multiple outputs, higher power ratings, lower ripple and precision, digital metering (+/- .001V, +/- .01A). Mid-range DC power supplies can be linear or switching and could range in price from $200 to $1,000.

High-end applications requiring high output voltage, advanced programmability (GPIB PC Interfaces), numerous outputs and very low ripple should budget in excess of $1,000 for their DC power supply. Many laboratory, R&D and testing applications could easily spend $5,000 to $10,000 per power supply.

Moving Toward Net Zero Energy – Watt Meters

For many people, the only thing they know about electricity is that they use it and get a monthly bill for that use. Volts, amps, watts, and kilowatt hours are a foreign language. In order to start reducing your electric bill, it is helpful to find out how much energy different parts of your house are using .Watt meters are very helpful devices to accomplish this.

There are two basic types of Watt meters. The first type is a plug meter designed to measure individual appliances. Simply plug your appliance into the meter, and plug your meter into the wall. With this information, you can quickly identify inefficient items. The second type of meter is a whole house meter which can be located in a convenient place in your home (the kitchen countertop for example), and will show you how much energy your home is using at any specific time, as well as cumulatively for the day and for the billing cycle.

A watt meter tells you how much power is being used. If you plug a 60 watt reading light into a watt meter, it should read something close to 60 watts. If you use that reading light for 3 hours a day for a month, you will have used 60 watts x 3 hours/day x 30 days = 5,400 watt hours. A good watt meter will allow you to leave something plugged in and will tell you both current watts and accumulated watt hours. You buy electricity from the utility company in units of 1000 watt hours or one kilowatt hour (kWh). Kilowatt hours are usually abbreviated kWh. If your utility charges you $.10/kWh, using the reading light for 3 hours a day for a month would cost 5.4 kWh * $.10 or $.54 per month.

What people do not realize is how much energy some devices use when they are off or on standby. For example, a computer uninterruptible power supply (UPS) backup battery with monitor, printer, computer, rechargeable phone, and computer speakers may draw 50 watts even when the system is off. In this case, 24 hours * 50 watts * 30 days * .10 /1000 = $3.60/month to run a computer that is turned off. Most homes have many devices that draw power when they’re off, and this is referred to as a “phantom load”. If your home has 10 devices that draw a 50 watt phantom load all the time, this starts to really add up. In the example above, you’d be spending $36 each month for things that were off or on standby. Not only is this an unnecessary cost, it causes unnecessary pollution as well. Once you’ve identified a phantom load, simply unplug the device when you are not using it, or put it on a power strip and switch the power strip off.

In addition to an instantaneous reading, some watt meters will project monthly kWh and/or cost. This is particularly useful for appliances such as refrigerators with compressors that cycle on and off. You can plug a refrigerator in for several days and the meter will estimate how many kWh the refrigerator will use for an entire month.

There are several brands of Watt meters on the market that will make your home energy audit go faster. The meters we found to do the job best are the “Kill-A-Watt ™” plug meter, the” Watts UP? ™” Plug meter, and the “TED ™” whole house meter.

The Kill A Watt is a good plug meter if you want to mainly measure watts and kWh. It is an inexpensive way to start getting the big picture of how your house is using electricity.

The Watts UP? plug meter adds a power cord to make it easier to use and has many more features such as the ability to project monthly kWh and cost. It also keeps track of many more values such as maximum and minimum. The Watts UP? PRO adds data logging to the Watts UP meter and will record data every second. Once memory fills up, it starts recording every two seconds. You still get good data resolution even after collecting data for a month. The data can then be downloaded into a computer and graphed for a visual of how your energy usage is going.

The TED meter will give second-by-second and daily feedback on energy use for the entire house. Part of the meter is set up inside your breaker box. There is a display unit that can be plugged into any outlet in the house. Most people do not know how much or little energy they are using until the monthly bill comes in. It is too late then to make adjustments. A TED meter is a great way to immediately see how changes in habits and devices affect the entire house energy usage. You might want to think about turning the television off before you go to bed.
