Christmas Ornaments: New Ideas for Old Decorations

Most families have a collection of Christmas ornaments they display on their tree year after year. Often times, these ornaments are full of sentimental value. However, when you've been using the same ornaments for many years, they can also get a little boring. The important thing to remember is, you don’t have to part with your old ornaments in order to freshen up your tree. Hang onto those treasured items and find a new way to display them.

When getting ready to clean out an old collection of Christmas ornaments, the first step is to weed out any items that are worn or broken. Some things you may be able to repair easily, while others will need to be thrown away for safety reasons. Next, go through the remaining ornaments and decide what you want to keep. If there are ornaments you don't want to keep, but also don't want to donate to charity, consider handing them down to another family member. The gift of an old heirloom ornament might mean a lot to someone else in the family.

Now that you've got your old Christmas ornaments cleaned out and you've decided what to keep, the next step is figuring out how to display them. If you still want to display them on the main Christmas tree in your house, then consider ways to freshen up the look of your tree. If you currently use an artificial tree, you might want to consider getting a live Christmas tree this year, or perhaps just purchasing a new artificial one in a different size or color. Adding a new set of ornaments in coordinating (or differing) colors will spruce up the look of the tree. You might also consider new lights. For example, if you've always used multi-colored lights in the past, try using plain white. You'll probably find that your holiday ornaments stand out a lot more. You could also add some other types of decorations to your tree to make it feel new again. Consider adding strings of beads, tinsel, feathers, floral accents...the sky's the limit! For a really unique and whimsical tree, you can add almost any item and it will simply add character to the tree and make it more interesting.

In some cases, you may not want to put your old ornaments back on your main Christmas tree. After all, you've been using them there for years, so why not come up with a totally new way to display them? One option is to purchase another, smaller tree that you set up in another part of the house, and use only your old decorations on that tree. If your collection of old ornaments isn't very big, a small tabletop tree will probably be large enough, and these smaller trees can be lovely on an end table or buffet, in a foyer, or on a countertop in a guest bathroom.

Old ornaments also make a nice display in a lighted curio cabinet. Try accenting the display with old photos of your family around the tree when it was decorated with those ornaments. Old ornaments can also be very carefully placed down inside a large clear glass vase, bowl, or hurricane lamp. This is a beautiful way to display your ornaments, while still keeping them safe. You can then use the vase or bowl as a centerpiece on your holiday table.

Be sure to choose a good, safe method of storage for your old ornaments. When packed away, you don't want them touching one another, because they may get scratched or broken. Also be sure to pack them toward the top of your boxes. Remember, the more you have to dig for something, the more likely it is to get broken.

So next time you're cleaning out your holiday decorations, don’t throw out old ornaments simply because you're tired of them. There are many new and fresh ways to display old items. With a little time and creative thinking, you too can come up with a unique new way to display your old memories.

The Incurable Addiction of Boating

It’s a known fact that boating magazines have been responsible for spreading strange afflictions to many unsuspecting NP’s (normal people) many of whom started out in their blighted lives innocently glancing through the pages of one of those aforementioned ‘Mags’ without realising the terrible dangers they were being exposed to.

These normal people (I was once one) are well known for their pitying sideways glances at the aqueously inclined subspecies known generally as ‘boaties, yachties’ and sometimes worse, ‘grotty yachties’.

Many of these NP’s frequent their local yacht clubs because the view over the water is wonderful, the chips are good and it’s possible to hobnob with people so rich that they don’t even own a boat. These elevated types are fawned and fondled over by the Commodore and are considered above questioning about such mundane exploits such as sailing, hoisting the yardarm and all that stuff. In fact, if a yachtie who could actually afford to keep his craft in such a place for a night or two, let alone the membership fees, dared to splash a dab of paint onto his “Lucky Lady IV” he’d run a real risk of being chucked out of the aforementioned establishment for lowering the tone of the joint.

However, I digress. It’s very difficult in many cases to pinpoint exactly which event causes the cerebral flash that causes many a sane man to crossover into the murky world of sawdust, sheds, spiling and tantric sawing and it’s said, in certain quarters, that it’s not at all like getting chickenpox or mumps because they actually go away after a bit. It is actually like getting religion, you know, the soul becomes permanently contaminated forever.

It’s a transformation, a ‘seeing of the light’ and the victim once hooked, is totally unaware that for evermore he will alienate the wife, mother-in-law and kids, ruin every stitch of clothing with epoxy and paint, wear the strangest of shoes, forget to mow the lawn and the oddest symptom of all, he will almost never again possess tidy hair or clean knees again.

The victim AI (after infection) will take to the shed, rifle the rent jar, convert the life savings into wood and begin to smell of paint, wood glue and acetone. Steadily growing piles of BM’s appear (boating mags) and the daily arrival of the postman will result in muffled chuckles of demented glee from the shed as he rips the wrapping off a new scarfing machine or a number 3 Stanley plane, now banned in many hardware shops (well, they must be, you can’t find one for love nor money these days).

It’s been statistically proven, in many cases wives and kids threaten to leave home and if they do, it’s a bad thing because the house becomes ‘workshop two’. Turps bottles replace milk cartons, the hallway becomes a parking lot ideally shaped for that unfinished catamaran hull, the fridge becomes a store for mixed–up epoxy glue which in turn, makes the bacon smell and taste of styrene, (which, of course in many cases, is a vast improvement).

Now the family dog begins advanced self-training and learns how to take itself for walkies, turns gradually feral and gnaws off cuts of cedar wood instead of bones.

The victim now tries frantically to save ready cash to make the bi-annual pilgrimage to the Holiest of holy Mecca’s, The Wooden Boat Show in Tasmania where he will mingle freely with other afflicted souls (well, at least the Government know where they all are at once, I suppose) Upon his return and surrounded by a holy glow, the shed will again echo to the whine of drill and the hypnotic drone of sander deep into the night. So deeply smitten, our man will by now no longer be able to know the difference between a few seconds and several hours, cups of tea will grow cold, old and mouldy and gradually be swallowed by the all invading sawdust.

The actual object of his attentions takes various forms. It may, to all intents and purposes, look like a perfectly ordinary kayak, a harmless skiff or a pleasant rowing boat but don’t be fooled for an instant. The Devil takes many forms and temptation is never far from the afflicted. You’d think, wouldn’t you, that once the fellow had purged these primeval urges, he would repent, hoover the house, delouse and retrain the dog, dispose of the empty stubbies and fall on his knees and beg the wife to return to a life of neat lawns and crisply ironed shirts.

But it is, I’m led to believe, a matter of record that once caught, this dreadful disease ruins the brain and is etched forever into the psyche that controls all human will and like smack cocaine, chocolate, rum and sex, once tasted, will never leave the victim in peace. Despite all promises to the contrary, he will return to his old habits and stroke timber planks and drool unknowingly over the freely available porn of boating magazines that lie in wait for yet more victims on the shelves of every newsagent in the land.

It is a confirmed scientific fact that male persons are much more likely to become infected than the female gender, but in one well known documented case, a decent lady turned into a yachty, gathered other females about her, got a boat and damned well sailed right round the world.

A well known publisher of such material who shall remain nameless but is known in the trade as “Pusher” (P.L.) when interviewed about his interests in these magazines, declined to comment except for one sentence only and I quote: “Whatever floats yer boat, mate!”

Breeding Betta Fish: Taking Care of the Babies

When breeding betta fish, it can be a rather difficult and time consuming process and you need to be dedicated and willing to put the effort in for your betta fish to breed with each other. You will know when your betta fish are ready for each other because they will do the embrace which is when the male betta fish wraps his body around the female betta fish, almost as though he is hugging the eggs right out of her.

As the female betta fish releases her eggs, the male betta will use his sperm to fertilize them and then he will begin his fatherly duties right away and care for the young. As soon as the male betta begins to scoop up the eggs with his mouth and put them into his nest then you should use the opportunity to scoop the female out of the tank and put her back into her own tank because that is her role done!

Watching the male betta fish take care of the eggs can be quite fascinating. Over two days the male will tend to the nest and scoop up any eggs which fall out of the nest and return them to the surface again. After two days you will begin to notice the small fry emerging from the nest. They do need to stay in the next for at least 36 hours so that their gills can develop and the male betta will continue to scoop up the babies and bring them back up to the surface. Usually around two days after they hatch the fry will begin to swim independently and you should remove the male betta from the tank because he could end up eating all of the young!

Breeding betta fish can be an amazing experience and once the fish have bred and the babies have been born then you need to start taking care of your baby betta fish. It can be quite difficult breeding betta’s in a tank environment because baby betta’s have small mouths and feed on the small microscopic beasts which live naturally in ponds and aquariums can run out of these quite quickly but you can breed the food that they need. You can do this by taking a large jar and filling it with some tank water and then put some grass or straw into the jar and then all you have to do is place the jaw on a sunny window sill. This will take about four days and once the small organisms are ready then you should scoop some of the water off of the top and then add it straight into the tank which contains the baby betta, instant betta food.
