Easy Things You Can Do to Reduce Your Energy Bill - Part 2
The conveniences we are very familiar with and don't think too much about can be surprisingly large areas for hidden costs. It is possible that you might not even know if your appliances are using too much energy or that you could be saving just by changing your routine. These tips can save you some good money. This article provides a few tips on lighting and appliances.
Wash clothes in cold water.
Most of the energy expended in washing clothes is used in heating the water. In most cases, warm or hot water does not help with the cleaning process, so set your washer on the cold setting. Hot water supplied by your home Water Heater cannot sterilize your clothes because it's not hot enough to kill the bacteria. That would take boiling-hot water and your tap water cannot possibly be even close to that, even if is set as wastefully high as possible! Detergents will work perfectly well in cold water.
Regularly clean out your dryer filter and exhaust vent. Your dryer will work with greater efficiency when air can flow freely through the unit. Take a moment to clean the lint filter after each use. Every now and then, inspect the vent for blockages. This will serve the additional purpose of eliminating the possible fire danger as well. In a situation where the vent ducts have several bends or sharp bends, see if you can rearrange them to reduce the number of sharp bends. Bends interfere with the airflow, which makes your dryer work longer to do its work.
Lights
Turn off unnecessary lights, just like Mom said. When you leave a room, take the time to turn them off. Not only will you save on the cost of lighting, but you can save on cooling too. Lights produce heat, and when it's hot out can put more stress on your air conditioning system. This is even more important if you use incandescent lights. These light types convert most of their energy usage directly into heat, not light! Do you really want electric heaters running in a room that you want to keep cool? And if you're thinking it would be good in the winter, that 90% efficiency is not very good for a heater, so it's wasteful in that situation too.
Use compact fluorescent lighting. You've probably heard this one. Replace those inefficient filament type bulbs with CFLs. The new fluorescent bulbs are about 4 times as efficient as the old ones and they generally last a lot longer. Over the course of its lifetime, one CFL can save you more than $25. If you are still a doubter, put them in light fixtures that are turned on a lot of the time and you'll quickly notice the difference.
